From Home Kitchen to Highway Eatery | Hunsur Bedare’s Kitchen

On a recent drive back from Madikeri, I stopped at Hunsur Bedare’s Kitchen, a rustic family-run eatery on the Hunsur highway serving traditional, predominantly non-vegetarian food.
What began quite by accident as a request from a banker for some home-cooked tiffin eventually grew into a small catering business, and, about four years ago, into Hunsur Bedare’s Kitchen.
Today, husband, wife, son and daughter are all involved in the kitchen, cooking and serving food based on recipes passed down through generations. Many of the recipes come from Mrs. Bedare’s mother and mother-in-law, with the family’s Bhavsar Maratha roots also influencing the food they serve.
I spent some time chatting with the family as they went about their work, before tasting my way through many of the dishes on their menu.
From their traditional preparations to the rustic kitchen and the story behind how this little highway eatery came to be, this was a lovely discovery in Hunsur.
