You realize the thermals you feel on battery is the heatsink doing its job

Generally pretty good advice. One thing which you didn't really mention is not to charge them up when you are finished with them. You did mention that they self discharge after a month to 30%. So I alway finish using them and then leave them around 1-2 bars. It's just like your EV - don't leave it sat at 100% for NMC batteries. So leaving them on the charger unit itself isn't the problem, once they reach 100% they don't carry on trying to charge. But after a month I presume that they might not then discharge to 30%. Charging them when they have been sat below 0°C (32°F) - when cold, the liquid electrolyte inside the battery thickens, slowing down the movement of lithium ions. During charging, the ions cannot penetrate the anode quickly enough. Instead, they form a solid layer of metallic lithium on top of the anode causing irreverable loss of capacity.

2.5 ah battery now $199. My ego string trimmer with battery cost less than the battery by itself! The batteries are where all manufacturers make there money!

I find that using my older battery in my ego fan is an awesome way to still use those batteries that cant take a heavy draw. I also put a10" fan behind the batteries as they charge.

@petervecchio8105 1 year ago

You're awesome! Thank you so much for laying this out so clearly!
I have the 21' mower & the leaf blower, both dating from 2018. I added the 18" Chainsaw in 2019. All the tools work great. But the batteries (5Ah & 7.5Ah) are holding less charge after 7 years use, and the 2.5Ah failed completely. I wish I had cared for the batteries more diligently IE letting them cool and using til exhausted, and will definitely follow your tips going forward.

Great video and information, jeff. Thanks so much for taking the time to help all of us EGO users.👏💪💡

I have a 2.5 ah with a date of 2016. Still going strong.

Number the batteries to rotate them.

I’ve always charged and stored my battery in my hot garage one is four years old, same with my two kobalt 40 volt batteries which are 9 years old

@Riptide360 2 months ago

Your ads are preventing playback after the space robot comment. Wanted to know if EGO batteries have battery management on the tool, battery, or both.

@ede8193 1 month ago

Well i just learned something....I did not know that the standing up charger is a Fast charger, I'm guessing that's why my battery is dead....just 3 yrs!

I have a 2.5ah, 4ah, 5ah, and a 6ah battery. I wish I had one more 5ah and 6ah battery.
My 6ah is newer. It seems to not be calibrated very well. It loses charge more quickly than my 5ah does.

@JC-wu4iw 4 days ago

Do you know if a battery today, 10/7/26 has a improved cemistry when compared to batteries from a year ago.

@starman2337 4 months ago

I don't want a "backup battery" that discharges itself if not used for 30 days.

@2hotscottpro 3 weeks ago

Battle born batteries were top expensive but fire starters.Heard lots of issues,weird shit,with ego.

@MD.ImNoScientician 2 months ago

¹I try to NOT take the batteries all the way to zero while using them.

²I try to place the freshly discharged battery over or near an a/c vent in my house to cool it down before I charge it.

³ I try to keep them all and my tools dust free.
However! 😂 A raccoon peed on my EGO chainsaw once.
I cleaned it all up though.😂
