"Boredom is eliminated before it gets a chance to become curiosity'... wow, yes

"It's not that deep" is such a tell.
Yeah, i know it's not that deep. That's the problem.

I hate the preoccupation with aesthetics so much. Please let me get curious and go on a rabbit hole for once 😢

The shots of the visuals from the movie legit just look like someone's  "dark romance" pinterest board....

“It’s a chick flick”…except the Brontë sisters wrote deep books that covered serious social issues. That really got me. Bring your gal pals and the wine…this movie about an abusive relationship will give the vibes!!  WTW?

I am also sick of empty consumption. I just watched this documentary, The Century of the Self by Adam Curtis, about how corporate America turned self-expression into consumerism. Aesthetics feel like the final endpoint of that idea, readymade identities that are easily disposable.

Apathy and outrage are the complementary cultural plagues of our era.

People either deny their heart, or ignore their brain.  Committing all of yourself to anything is "cringe".

But passion doesn't need approval.  Real doesn't ask permission.  Eventually the parasites will eat themselves and we'll still be here.

This is one of the reasons I started a Media Journal, to make myself slow down, think and write about my thoughts & feelings on the media I'm watching/reading instead of just mindless consuming

That's probably why I enjoy weird art and want to create weird art. Art that breaks some "rules", looks kind of "incorrect" or uncanny. It's just.. refreshing in a way. Makes you inspired, makes you try and think for some time.

I hate the over demanding, over stressing, over pretentious everything has become. I paint, I used to share my art on instagram and people would engage, people who cared, people with whom I could connect...now if I dont do 12331 reels, I dont show my face in a aesthetic way, if I dont use the music that's trending for the painting I'm sharing...then noone will see it.
it is tiring

"its not that serious" drives me up the wall

Something else I've noticed with modern media, is I'm at a point where I'm so used to (and honestly often kind of sick of) irony, subversion and fourth wall breaking that I'm actually pleasantly surprised when a piece of media plays things straight which is very much a 'the bar is on the floor' standard but that's where we are right now.

For example I watched Thunderbolts when that came out and I think it was the first time in ages I came out of a Marvel movie feeling like I'd actually watched one that actually felt like it wanted to actually give me some degree of emotional depth and make me care about the characters and I was actually invested in the story and feel like I can actually think about the film and like would want to discuss it with people. Like that one film managed to punch in more emotional depth than the majority of the MCU has done in the however many years now it's been a thing.

Like one of the things I'm looking for in the media I engage with is sincerity like whatever you're doing please commit to it like ok make the superhero movie with the cheesy lines but lean into it and don't undercut it with a 'wink wink nudge nudge yeah corny right we're so self aware of how dumb this is' and the thing is I do enjoy  parody or satire but I've realised that the best ones of those are created by people who actually know and in most cases enjoy the thing they're making fun of.

There's just such a bent towards 'subversion' and 'reimagining' and sometimes it's for things where I'm like 'ok but there's hardly any examples of that thing being done right the first time, can we get a few of those first, thanks'

"created to offend absolutely no one" ...yeah...we're already so deep into Fahrenheit 451 it gets scarier every day.

I want something to obsess over, something that I turn over in my mind and have waves of realisation about it. Glad I found you - your look is magnificent btw ❤

Staring at a white wall is more entertaining than trying to keep up with the flood of media. I find my satisfaction from acting upon sparks of inspiration by creating, whether it be clothes, painting, or doing something I've always been afraid of doing. The comfort zone is truly the death of those sparks of inspiration, so I try to avoid being in it for too long. Finding other people who seek depth is something I need to be focusing on more, time to turn that brain drain off.

You centered the point about creativity being born out of discomfort and curiosity.
Yesterday a friend asked me why I like jellyfish so much. It's because once I almost smashed my face into one.

Thank you for making this video and not letting us feel alone with this feeling of emptiness. I consume "simpler" content because sometimes my brain can't handle more: we live in a system where we work 10 hours a day, and on top of that, we have to deal with the responsibilities of being an adult (grocery shopping, cleaning, taking care of our pets or other people). We fool ourselves into thinking that watching 30 videos in an hour is more rewarding than watching one or two in that time because we have so little time to "live" that it seems we have to consume as many "hobbies" as possible. And in the end, you feel empty because you don't retain anything. Maybe you talk about it on social media for two days and then move on to something else, as you rightly say... It's frustrating. And my days all started to feel the same. Luckily, this feeling also led me to think about it so I wouldn't just stay complaining hahaha. Now I've managed to read more, I watch series that offer me more, I have better concentration for gaming since I bought a handheld console with emulators and I'm playing games from my teenage years again! Of course, sometimes I rewatch movies or series that are "simple," but that's because I choose to, not because the algorithm doesn't give me other options. Again, thanks for the video! 🖤

The 2010s saw the rise of a stand against pretension and snobbery, but that was so successful, it dominated the cultural landscape as it morphed into widespread anti-intellectualism. If there's anything worse than pretentious nerds, it's anti-intellectual nerds.

This is totally intentional inmo, it kind of came with the subscription models like Netflix where they promise you something meaningful , then you watch it and it doesn't deliver and you go on the next thing which promises the same , its like all you can eat buffet that keeps on going. True art or original things make you stop, think and reflect - which is bad for business, because if you stop and reflect it means you might change your life instead of paying your next month subscription payment. Sadly the effect of that is that original things nowadays feel more and more alien to a lot of people and everything has to be explained to them. Also this is why everything  popular nowadays is always "ironic" or "self-aware/meta " because it pretends to be intellectual , but in reality its insecurity of diving deeply into something , so you say something is "stupid"  out of fear that somebody might point it out first.  Its like how insecure people say they what they are saying  "might sound silly ", just in case their ideas are not good enough, and by pointing it out this gives you some sort of intellectual high ground, because you are not like the other idiots  who don't realize how silly/unaware they sound. But in the end its fear of thinking and expressing yourself.

Recently I rewatched The Red Shoes and the French black and white Beauty and the Beast for the first time in years just to feel something. I find that people are afraid to watch truly old and "slower paced" media, but I grew up watching this stuff religiously since my parents were older (I was born in 98 but my dad was born in 55). It's incredibly important to watch and read the work that gives our world context.
