I bought a new car last week and the first thing I did was add a few door dings, scuffed up the bumpers, and threw a few small rocks at the front windshield.
I soak any hard leather saddle in water over night or longer to soften, then sand then conditioner. It helps. This came out real nice looking hope it’s comfortable enough 👍
Oh man, I wish I'd seen this before buying an original Brooks. I've worked with leather for decades making hats, holsters and various things. It's a supremely moldable material using anything from water to Mink oil to their Proofide. My Brooks is rock hard but quite ridable as is. I'm looking forward to persuading it to be even friendlier.
Love all your videos! I really like your efforts to restore bikes to as near original condition as possible. Look forward to seeing the completed project with new seat!
First a Brooks Saddle does not have lacquer on it , Brooks put some of there own leather cream on then they buff it up , it might look as if it’s lacquered but it’s not , I’ve had Brooks Saddles for years and when I buy a new one I treat it with a good layer of Brooks leather cream and leave it to soak a few days then I fit it to the bike .
I have a Brooks leather seat on my Rad Rover fat bike with aprox. 1500 miles on the seat. I also have a Selle leather seat on my Kestrel Talon full carbon. I like the Selle so much better. 1. It's mostly broken in at purchase. The leather is thinner and there is a slit down the middle allowing more give or movement while peddling. I deeply regret getting my brooks.
Hi greetings from UK just came across your video have had a new Brooks saddle in garage for 18 months trying to soften it, followed your video and must admit its almost ridable , cheers , Fred Bissett
I currently own 7 Brooks saddles. 6 B17s & 1 B68. I've owned others but foolishly let them go with bikes I sold in the past. I no longer let a broken-in Brooks go with any bike I sell. I broke all of them the hard way, but used Proofhide which penetrated whatever coating Brooks puts on the leather just fine. I'll likely never again have to break in a new Brooks saddle, but if I do I'll try your method.
Great video, I've always wanted a brooks saddle after riding on one years ago. I can't justify paying more for the saddle than my bike is worth. I'm definitely going to try this after watching this. Would something like neetsfoot oil soften the leather too much if put on before weatherproofing with Beeswax?
