The War of the Crossed Keys was more than just a war—it was a battle for supremacy between Pope Gregory IX and Emperor Frederick II. Excommunicated yet undefeated, Frederick defied the papacy, crushed his enemies with military brilliance, and reshaped his empire through sweeping reforms. From his legendary Constitutions of Melfi to his dazzling court of scholars, poets, and exotic beasts, Frederick was a ruler unlike any other.

"Sir, I believe you've gone mad with power..."
"Of course I have! You ever tried going mad without power? It's boring, no one listens to ya...."

“Why let being enemies with the most powerful monarch in Europe get in the way of a good crusade?”

@cole4783 1 year ago

I think it is interesting how the things that made Fredrick “the antichrist” wasn’t his cruelty to peasants (which is frankly par for the course) but simply his issue with papal authority

Rebelling against your father usually involves getting a piercing or taking drugs. Not trying to overthrow him from power twice lol.

Hannibal in the 2nd Punic War: Has elephants cross the Alps to subdue Rome, but fails.
Frederick II: Has multiple animals foreign to Europe cross the Alps to subdue his son's rebellion, and wins.

Excommunicate, excommunicate, EXCOMMUNICATE!

Are we sure this Emperor with “unlimited power” isn’t just medieval Emperor Palpatine?

Villainous curiosity is a truly intriguing trope that I'm figuring out how to work into my own stories as we speak.

In yugioh terms: Gregory used Solemn Scolding, but it took away the rest of his life points and he died.

A new episode of Extra history, a Monte Cristo sandwich on one side, a bowl of kettle chips on the other, and a vanilla coke in my hand. Life doesn't get better than this.

EDIT: Uh... the snacks might have been a mistake.

EDIT 2: Having finished the episode, I can confirm that the intro was as bad as it got. The other human experiment stories weren't as gruesome, and my Monte Cristo was eaten without incident lol.

It's so impressive to be remembered as both the 'Antichrist' and 'Stupor Mundi'(Wonder of the World)

9:39 When Gregory died, the Cardinals actually did pretty easily choose a new pope, Celestine IV. The election only took a month. The problem is Celestine promptly died 17 days later. After which it took them a year and a half to elect Innocent IV.

Never been so proud to be sicilan and studied Federick II at the university of Palermo in middle age history

@tile-x6z 1 year ago

14:21 What sort of influence one must have for a pope to initiate a crusade against you personally. You, as an individual. And for many lords and barons to straight up ignore the pope in your favor. Heck, Frederick truly was a badass

@cosmedelustrac5842 1 year ago

Henry VII deserves a worst kids in history episode.

On the subject of not getting on with the papacy, it'd be great to see a series on the Hussite Wars.

I have to say, using flying/bird type Pokémon for Frederick II's love of avian studies is both funny and a nice touch. Keep up the good work, EH Team!

Fredrich 2nd was indead
- Holy , for taking part of the 6th crusade and retaking Jérusalem
