Oh, women may not have been buying perfume, in public at the dept. store counter, but they were buying perfume! Avon had been around since the late 1800's, going door to door, like the Fuller Brush man. Women were purchasing perfume, cosmetics, lotions and silver jewellery from the Avon lady, in the privacy of their homes. The fancy and much more expensive perfumes in the dept stores, were the special occasion "gift" perfumes. Women may not have been buying those on their own, but they were buying perfume. My mom always had a bottle of Avon's Topaz perfume on her dressing table, and others, as well, in the 1950's. The bottles were always fancy and sculptural! Women were wearing perfume, even if they were making it themselves from lemons, brown sugar, vanilla and a carrier oil!

Lovely and reflective topic. I think Youth Dew was merely promoted as the fragrance a woman bought for herself, but drugstores had been carrying 'toilet water' (lavender cologne, rose cologne, violet cologne, etc) for decades, as well as Avon women selling door to door. Some of the scents were actually quite lovely and all were genuinely affordable. As for twin sets, I'm morally certain my grandmothers had the cotton ones, which were sold right alongside the wooly ones in catalogues of the era. :) I also want to add that even today I choose to live frugally and SPEND that 40 min. to get a great item that suits me perfectly, rather than just grab whatever at the generally 'fair' price. Trying things on, altering them to fit, and/or sewing them yourself is what my grandmother and mother taught me, and work in every generation - even if you can merely afford Walmart or the thrift store. :) (They also garage saled, haha!)

I wear Fire & Ice and Youth Dew. Still have my charm bracelet. ( I was born in 68). Dad always bought mum Chanel No.5. Nostalgia is wonderful now that they're gone. 💕

I started wearing Chanel No. 5 in college. My sister wore White Shoulders. I still wear No. 5, every day. In fact, when my husband proposed (we celebrated 43 years of marriage May 1st) I asked him, "Do you even know how much Chanel No. 5 is?" My sister was there, and she said, "Shut up! He'll learn!" She and her own Prince Charming celebrated 43 on April 9th. We both still wear our signature red lipstick, too.

After I found my first job after being released from active duty and graduating college I bought myself a set of 14K gold earrings that came with a necklace, and a ring 💍. The earrings are turtle 🐢 shaped, the necklace has a turtle 🐢 charm, and the ring has a turtle that moves its head. It’s the best investment I’ve ever made.

Most of the items you showed I don't remember my Mother ever had. I know she did wear red lipstick but what color I don't know because back in the 1950s I was a youngster. I remember her wearing hose with a girdle she clipped her hose to (forgot what they were called). She never had a hat box because she didn't wear a hat. I have two hat boxes, one is made of plastic and the other is made of cardboard. Each one has a hat that I wore once, many years ago. Mother and I traveled a lot back in the 1970s when we both had a train case which we carried shampoo, conditioner, soap, brush and comb in. Today mine sits on my dresser holding lots of costume jewelry. Several years ago I came across a pair of cat eyed sunglasses and I wear them all the time. I used to wear red lipstick in the winter but now I wear a dark pink. My latest color is Revlon's Electric Melon. This video was very interesting and I enjoyed seeing what women back in the 1950s wore. I do remember that Mom always dressed up and us children too, when we went out. Today it's anything goes.God bless.

I have still many if the things mentioned and some if them originals bought at vintage markets or thrift stores and some inherited from my mom, Gran and great grandmother. The only thing I owned myself and do not anymore is my charm bracelet. Sadly it was lost in a house burglary where the safe as a whole was taken.
