The male lead suffers from deep depression and trauma after losing a friend in a car accident. He freezes at the sound of a siren and sinks into total helplessness even while showering. His girlfriend is his only link to the world, but when he realizes she skipped her job interview out of anxiety because he didn't pick up the phone, it breaks him.
Their breakup isn't just about losing love; it's the painful realization that they can no longer help each other. He can't watch her give up her future for him, and she resigns herself to the fact that her presence isn't making him any better. Knowing this story makes the 'blue' in this song feel so much deeper.

Thnak you for your reaction:)

Another interpretation is that the accident happens first, where the male lead survives and the other person does not, because of that the male lead develops (understandably) ptsd (scene where the ambulance makes him stop on his tracks) and depression, and our female lead is his partner, but comes a moment where no matter how much you love and care for someone, their afflictions start to affect you too, and the relationship you have gets strained. And you come to the realization that you are not good for each other anymore in this moment of life. She is getting so affected by his state, that she's falling into his blue.

For a tiny bit of extra Korean cultural context, the reason she was so panicked when he didn't answer his phone is that South Korea leads the world in deaths by suicide.

My read is that she loved him both before and after the accident, but his depression and PTSD made it so that he couldn't connect with or support her. I read the breakup scene on the water as one that was discussed beforehand - and it's him not wanting to drag her down with him.

It hurts for sure. And the song is just so beautiful. It sounds so simple, with an unadorned vocal. Freaking hard to sing though. 😂

Olivia was right. One of members had been through this kind of situations , that’s why they sing Blue emotionally and elaborately.

It's such a gorgeous sad song and it also became a bit of a trend to do it as a singing challenge, like a dance challenge - which was really cool but felt a little odd. People cheerfully trying to sing this very sad song.

i've been waiting for u guys reacting to this omggg, finally!! thank you for the knowledge aswell.

long story short the male got depressed/mental issue after he lose his friend in a car crash and felt guilty bcs he's the only one survived (or maybe he rather die instead of his friend) so he still have the guilt. Meanwhile his gf was his only world, seeing her getting so affected by his states and sacrificing her future bcs of him rlly makes the depression and guilt worse. So they decided break up was the best choice for both of them
