I Love these tractors. The first with the three point linkage and hydraulics. It set the standard for all future tractors.

I still use our 1958 Massey Ferguson TO35 (w/A Continental Diesel engine) on our farm that my Dad purchased new in 58'. Its been fully rebuilt twice in all these years and it still runs like new today.. The thing is just a beast, plows snow, Bush hog, pulls a plow & discs, Auger Drill, 84" landscape box and several other attachments every year... I could never part with this tractor and whats so crazy is in India they (Mahindra who bought the rights) literally still build this same tractor and getting parts for it is extremely easy...

The 3-point linkage was a great invention, along with Australia's Stump Jump Plough in the 1870's.

Very well explained, I was almost convinced that Rock Island Heider had the first 3 pt. hitch, but theirs wasn't designed to transfer the forces to the front of tractor.

I have a '49 8N and didn't realize just how cool and revolutionary it is. I mainly use it for shovelling snow and cutting grass, but I can see how awesome it would work pulling a 2 bottom

I grew up in the 1970s on a farm in Germany, at that time any tractor had such system which was named "Regelhydraulik" (hydraulic controller) in German. Our tractors had 2 levers, one which was having "fixed" level (not influenced by the pulling force of the tractor) and the other working with the controller (moving upwards when the pull force of the tractor increased above the point it was set to).
When at the age of ~10 I was put to the tractor I sometimes mixed up the levers, and it took me a while to known when to use which - it was horrible if the 3-point hitch started to suddenly move upwards just because my grandfather had pulled at the upper lever of the 3-point while standing at the lower two...

My dad used to tell me .."Give me a Lever and I'll lift the World."  Most everything in engineering and physics is centered around a force and counter-force, balance and counter-balance, with datums, fulcrums, and arms.  Ferguson's invention literally changed the world, feeding it much faster.  You could in fact argue the population explosion of the 20th century was in part due to this invention.  Before planes, trains, and automobiles, our industrialization began with machines like the tractor.

This is the best explanation of the Ferguson system I've ever seen. I grew up with a 9N Ford just like the one in this movie. But I don't think very many farmers had more than one top link on their farm, it generally stayed with the tractor, not the implement.

These tractors (Fords, Fergusons, Ford-Fergusons) were an amazing leap forward for farmers. Small, affordable, relatively powerful, easy to maintain and repair, everything a guy needed at that time as we moved away from horses. I still use two of them today: A 1950 Ferguson TEA-20 (English-built) and a 1963 Massey Ferguson 35 (Detroit-built). But at the end of a day of plowing or raking my arms ache! No power steering at that time.

I've used tractors with this feature, but I had no idea the problem it solved while harenessing a distinct mechanical advantage to the tractor.

I grew up on 2 60s model Massey Fergusons hands down the best and handyest tractors I've ever worked.

They didn't know yet that inserting the lynch pins from the top would result in weeds flipping them out of their holes and detaching the implement.  Learned that the hard way as a kid. Inserted them from the bottom up and never lost a lynch pin in the field again.

The gearstick starter was also thoughtful, as it had to be in neutral to start. Many accidents occured when operators started a tractor whilst standing on the ground, assuming it was in neutral.
