Never knew you were a sailor, Matt.

0:37 "Exemple of what many of you have lying around" bro, i daily drive this😭😭😭

Fun video for aspiring homelabbers, but you really should have at least explained static IPs. People might be confused when their server IP changes and they cannot reach it anymore until they figure out the new address.

"Procurement of media" Arrr mateyyyyyyyy

Even though I'm the tech guy of the family and everyone would seek my help for computer related problems, they'd rather throw away their old hardware instead of giving it to me for free.

0:15 THAT'S THE LAPTOP I USE 😭😭😭 When searching for this I was thinking OLD old, not literally the one I use daily hahahahaha

Only 7 years?? One of my still functioning laptops dates back to the early 2000s. It runs Linux, because of course it does.

I have a feeling I’m about to just go ruin my old laptop lol

You covered everything that most people skip or lightly breeze over and as a IT professional working on the hardware side, I very much appreciate that!

Some additional info, that might be useful:
1. Those older laptops, like the one in the video, often have optical drives. You can buy cheap adapter/caddy, that will convert this bay to another 2.5" SATA slot. This way you can add more storage or make current storage redundant.
2. Turn off Secure Boot. Most Linux distros does not work well or even boot with Secure Boot enabled, so disable it in BIOS. Keep UEFI mode on.
3. CasaOS has not been updated since December of 2024. While officially project is not dead or suspended, the company behind it is focusing all its efforts on the new product, which is ZimaOS. Future of CasaOS is unclear, so there's no guarantee that it will ever be updated.

Honestly switching a windows 7 laptop over to a linux OS makes that thing feel brand new.  It truly is amazing what the bloat of windows can do to a machine.

Tailscale is also handy for accessing your Jellyfin when outside of your home network.

can't watch this for free bro 😭
normally, I'll meet to watch 8 to 10 videos just to get half of this informations.....
damnnnnn, thanks a lot man

Bold of you to assume I have friends

1st video I have seen on YT that showed me everything in detail as a big brother and not a Linux nerd looking down on people who can't code

Subscribed!

This is the exact laptop i use as my main 😭😭

"You have one lying around"

I have to main this ancient relic lmao

0:32 Glad to see I'm not the only one who uses the "spam the button till the screen changes" trick

Brother, sailing the high seas just earned you a sub.

I’m a first year college student, the maximum my tech knowledge goes is roms, following instructions on a raspberry pi, and looking stuff up on google. I use a flip phone, can’t use Microsoft for the life of me, and everything I own is 20 years out of date. Safe to say I’m not the most tech savvy out there. But despite all that I was able to follow this how to fairly easily. I ran into a few hiccups with Ubuntu not recognizing my Ethernet cable, and ssh not being enabled, but with a little research I solved my issues within minutes. This video was ridiculously useful. It took me just two days to set up (I started off using a different guide so) and I only spent 5 bucks on an Ethernet cable because mine was chewed to death by cats. You’re very good at explaining things and I thoroughly enjoyed this video.

I had no idea you could do the lid closed thing holy now i have to do this when i get back from the gym
