The plot revolves around one of the decisive stages of the Great Patriotic War – the Soviet crossing of the Dnieper in 1943. Two battalions are thrown into a disastrous breakthrough on the German-held bank of the river, aiming to divert enemy forces and thereby facilitate the division's advance on a strategically important city. The main formations are to support them with artillery and air fire. However, command suddenly changes the attack plan, leaving the battalions without fire support, thereby dooming them to certain destruction. Moreover, the soldiers were ordered to hold out to the last...
