Tried this last Sunday the opposite way round. Panicked a bit finding the track on wigg Island. Very wet and muddy so will try it again in summer. Was a bit worried that I would find a random gate blocking my path, but felt better when I saw two cyclists coming towards me from Moore.

I'm from Widnes. Its incredible what was done to improve Spike Island. I remember it in the 70s - chemicals waste and pollution. It was awful. Now its a beautiful nature reserve. I love visiting it. I don't think enough credit is given to the people who worked to improve it. Perhaps the younger generation are not aware of its history. Thanks for the vid. 😊

I used to live right by where the transporter bridge was. That was after it closed. I vaguely remember going over on it as a very young child. I remember being scared as I looked down at the water. Lots of history in West Bank.

We were called wolleybacks because people from Liverpool thought we were like sheep on the hillside outside of the city.

Regarding the brick building(s) now owned by United Utilities, I believe they allow access to the inspection tunnels for the Vyrnwy Aqueduct, which has carried drinking water from Lake Vyrnwy in Wales to Merseyside since 1892. The water pipes pass under the Manchester Ship Canal and the Mersey at this point. Note the two large concrete bricks inscribed LCW and 1938. Liverpool's water supply was managed by Liverpool Corporation Waterworks at his time (it was founded in 1847).

Incidentally, the brick building is not far from Randles Sluices which allow excess water to be drained from the ship canal into the Mersey. I think the old sluice keepers cottage has largely been destroyed by vandals now. It was still intact but derelict the last time I walked along there (sometime in the 2010s).

Just found you on YouTube and enjoying your local knowledge on rides that I do myself. However, I think the Widnes Future Flower metallic sculpture would have been worth a stop and mention on the route you rode from Spike Island up to  the Ferry Tavern on the Transpennine route

Hi just come across the channel and having watched quite a view I’m now hooked. So I’ve subscribed and cannot wait for more.

We usually start at spike island towards Warrington on the same route but then come out by the swing bridge, over that towards darsbury, then through more to Runcorn and back over bridge to Widnes.

Nice video, thanks. I wanted to do this route but hadn't done it for years and couldn't quite remember how to get through some sections, watching this really helped. I seem to remember having to squeeze through a fence near Wigg island last time, good to see it's opened up now. Enjoyed the local info too 👍
