Kagoshima City, with its narrow plains, has little habitable land, and its population density exceeds that of Niigata City, a designated city. There is also little space for road construction, resulting in chronic congestion.
The JR Ibusuki Makurazaki Line runs through the city's suburban residential areas, causing severe congestion in the mornings and evenings due to passengers waiting at railroad crossings. To alleviate this, in 2016 the area around Taniyama Station and Jigenji Station on the line was elevated and renovated with new station buildings. JR Kyushu, the operator of the line, is implementing many measures to encourage more people to use the railway, elevating it to become not just a means of transportation but also a "destination." Both Taniyama and Jigenji Stations have been designed with such care that it's hard to believe they are located in residential areas, especially when they are unmanned at certain times of the day.
