For everyone wondering how Kanata’s underpowered 86 actually keeps up with 600 plus horsepower supercars, it all comes down to Ryosuke Takahashi’s genius Grip-to-Weight Ratio regulation and a specific tire trap.
First, there is the Spec Tire Rule. Every car in MFG is forced to use the exact same regulated, mandatory spec tire compound. Supercars cannot use their custom, ultra-sticky modern racing tires. Instead, they are stuck on the same rubber as everyone else, with their tire size based strictly on how heavy the car is, which means they cannot use weight reduction.
The real secret is the Tire Trap. Kanata eventually figures this out during his races. The MFG spec tires are engineered to have highly durable lateral side-to-side grip, but very fragile longitudinal forward-and-backward grip.
This rule completely destroys the supercars because when heavy, high-horsepower cars violently accelerate or brake on the tight mountain roads, they use longitudinal grip. This destroys and melts their tires within a few laps, leaving them sliding around like they are on ice skates.
Meanwhile, it heavily benefits the 86 because Kanata does not have the power to abuse his tires under acceleration. Instead, he relies entirely on carrying momentum through corners using lateral grip, which lasts way longer. While the supercars destroy their tires trying to manage massive power and weight downhill, Kanata can maintain a blistering, perfectly consistent pace from start to finish.
I'm loving the announcer in this English dub. Dude's voice is just raspy enough that it feels like he's insanely hyped at the most intense moments (and doesn't have any time to drink water).
I love the people missing the point about Kanata keeping up against Supercars; it isn’t entirely about them having better cars, it’s about the fact the other drivers are so incomprehensibly shit at racing that Kanata looks like he’s insanely fast.
I mean come on, after this race Sena asks Keisuke to drive Akagi in his car. He then proceeds to lose his shit thinking his boss is a crazy freak for going flat out almost immediately. Sena, one of the more capable drivers in Rounds 3 onwards, is Itsuki by comparison to the old guard. If the guy who can keep up with the leaders of this race is having trouble comprehending one of the best street racers out there who’s been out of the game for a while, then where does that put Kanata and Beckenbauer? Besides, Sawatari’s also suspect, his Alpine A110 at best is the same hp as the GT86 in this race, likely worse, and he’s in podium position for the entirety of the race basically against the exact same threats.
