I laughed when they said another slow song. Buckle up fellas. Once they kick it in they don’t let off.

100% right. 80s kids were telling the horror of their parents. It wasn’t the peace love of the 60s. It was the anger and horror of the aftermath.

They were the first metal band to perform the Grammys by playing this song. They were nominated for an award (but lost.) But playing live for all to see & hear was bigger than any award. Legendary

This song is a masterpiece

The movie is “Johnny Got His Gun”…and trust me you don’t want to see it. It’s about a soldier who was hit by artillery and had his arms and legs blown off, his face essentially blown off and lost his sight, hearing and ability to speak. Doctors think he’s brain dead, when he isn’t. He’s trapped with no way to tell anyone that he’s still there.

The movie is 3 hours of pure misery. I rented it when this video premiered on MTV in 1989, I was 16 at the time. After it was over, it was like 4pm and I had no energy. I was so drained mentally that all I could do was roll over and sleep for a while. To do that to me at 16 when I was usually full of energy (and ADHD lol but it wasn’t known at the time, they just called kids like me “hyper kids”), anyway to do that to me at 16 is just crazy.

One of the greatest "anti-war" songs ever.

The first music video in the bands discography

I’m an old rock head and this made me smile. That’s the only way to listen to this song !!!!!

NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT 🔥🔥🔥🔥🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

when they play that live, they have pyrotechnics and explosions.  it's insane live.

This song is a fucking banger!

Welcome to the gold standard of metal. There will only ever be one.

Based on the book "Johnny Got His Gun" and then made into a movie

The first album with Jason on bass,  RIP Cliff. He passed in a bus accident in Europe in 86'. So this was a dark time for the band. Cliff was on the frist 3 albums. Incredible Bass player

Best anti war song ever.

Come on in Brothers! Welcome to to the metal gnikcuF fold!!! 🙏🏻🤘🏻

I loved your reaction. Their instrumentation often tell the story along with the lyrics. The first part gives you a sense of hopelessness and despair, which evolves into anger and frustration really highlighting the emotional rollercoaster of the soldier.

He basically lost all his limbs and the ability to hear and speak. Imagine not being able to tell whether youre awake or asleep in an endless nightmare praying for God to wake you up. Powerful song

The soldier lost all of his limbs, and all of his senses. He didn’t know if he was awake or asleep. He couldn’t talk. He just wanted to die, but he had no way of telling them. They are debating whether or not to keep him alive. You see the flashbacks of his dad teaching him Morse code so he could communicate with his friend, he was saying “S.O.S” and “Kill me.” The part where he is asking his parents for help always gets me.

Another great line is “Death has a dignity of its own.” It’s a sad story. My uncle was in Vietnam, the stories… it’s super fucked up. Both sides did terrible things. From the use of napalm and killing innocents to sending kids into platoons with bombs. He was 18 when he joined. I can’t imagine having to kill kids when you’re still a kid yourself. Rough war.

Dope reaction. I love seeing them vibing out with so much appreciation.

I played this shit SOOOO loud in the car stereo in my '78 Cutlass Supreme
