In 2012, security forces in Cairo seized 13 large suitcases that were about to be smuggled out of the country.
The strange thing was that what was inside these suitcases wasn't money, drugs, or even antiquities.
It was much more dangerous than that.
Thousands of old documents related to Jewish properties in Egypt, including real estate, companies, shops, and documents belonging to families that were once among the richest and most powerful in the country.
The investigation at the time stated that the shipment was en route to Jordan, and that there were suspicions it was intended to continue on to Israel. From that moment, many questions arose: Who collected these documents? How did they get out? And, most importantly, what were they intended to be used for?
Were they worthless? Or were they meant to be a bargaining chip in one of the most critical historical cases: the issue of Jewish property in Egypt?
