Australia's New Invention Could Replace Solar Panels Forever
#australia #solar #technology
The solar cell inside almost every panel on Earth was invented in Sydney. In 1983, Martin
Green's team at UNSW developed the PERC cell, and by 2021 it was inside 91.2 percent of
the silicon solar modules made worldwide. Australia now has around 4.3 million rooftop
solar systems, more capacity than its entire coal fleet, and still makes around one
percent of its own panels. In July 2026, a University of Sydney team led by Professor
Anita Ho-Baillie certified a 30.2 percent perovskite silicon tandem cell at CSIRO, past
the ceiling silicon alone has been stuck under for decades.
In this video, we trace how a Sydney laboratory designed the modern solar cell and its
graduates helped build China's solar industry, why a single layer of silicon can never
catch most of the sunlight that hits it, how a crystal found in the Ural Mountains in
1839 became the most promising solar material in the world, how CSIRO prints solar cells
on rolls of plastic and flew them into orbit, and what still stands between perovskite
and the roof of your house.
The first time Australia invented the solar cell, the rest of the world built it. This
time, the hardest part is no longer the factory.

🏭 ABOUT THIS CHANNEL
We investigate the technology quietly rewriting the modern world, and the countries
building it while everyone looks the other way. The laboratories. The factories. The
breakthroughs that could change where a nation's energy comes from. If you want to
understand where the next decade is being built, subscribe and turn on notifications.
