Setting boundaries with family is so tough. Have you ever had to set a difficult boundary to protect your mental health? How did you handle it?

My father was the alcoholic and when I was young, I thought my mother was part of the problem. But as I got older, I realized her strength and that she was a survivor. We became very close later in life, and I miss her. ❤

She’s so wise. I remember reading some things she wrote when I was younger and how it helped with my self esteem. I resonate with her saying people don’t change until they want to change. We cannot change others. I appreciate her also talking so openly about therapy and normalizing it. She has so much love for her mother, even while understanding her mother’s limitations.

Went to ballet school with her (Helen Butleroff NYC approximately 1974) As I remember she was extremely shy, quiet and definitely introverted) Felt like she could have been a good friend but I was super shy as well.I never knew what she was going thru and I definitely admire her more now than ever! She so Genuine as well as Beautiful ❤

Elizabeth Taylor had the Original 'Momanger'. Sarah Taylor. Elizabeth couldn't even go to the restroom alone, even when in she was 16-17yrs old. She said it was why she married for the first time at such a young age, to a man she barely knew. For some form of Freedom.

When I realized that who was I was to them was what I did for them. That felt transactional. It was. Once I decided to be unavailable, allowing them the opportunity to figure it out for themselves, they were not at all happy about it. They even referred to my motives as being selfish. Truth is that my mental health was not in a good place because I felt isolated in that relationship. I was pulling the weight. When I decided to start focusing on myself and spending my time putting myself back together, I began to get my creativity back. I started doing things that made me smile. I felt free. They're still angry. I don't know why they are, because if someone I cared about what getting help and improving their mental health, I'd be so thankful for that and impressed by their bravery.

Addiction doesn’t only impact the person struggling with it. It changes the people who love them too. Healing begins when we stop trying to control someone else’s recovery and start taking responsibility for our own.

So many children were and are being raised by alcoholics, and your honesty and vulnerability will share a light for others who need healing. Blessings and best wishes always.
