I remember buying 10 Halloween masks for 20k each and everyone thought I was crazy. Years later I sold it when they were 3 million and felt like a investment genius at 13 years old.

7:42 The guys who found out how to cheat in items could have just hoarded the secret and made a bunch of gold (and money), but instead of that they just dropped Christmas crackers everywhere. In doing this they channeled the true spirit of Christmas.

My older brother played this game non stop and when getting into an argument with our father would say “just one of my hats and me would buy this place” then scoff and go back to gaming. I wonder now if this is what he was talking about.. his ole PC is still in storage.

12:31 It's funny how Andrew explicitly said the drops were 'just a surprise' and 'nobody took them seriously' — yet he deliberately programmed the loot table so some party hats were rarer than others. You don't add weighted rarity tiers to something you consider a throwaway joke. Equal distribution was trivially easy to code. He chose not to. And then he stopped the drops entirely, which he also had to have known would make them permanently scarce. Whether he fully predicted what they'd become or not, the fingerprints of intentional collectible design are all over this — and then he turns around and acts confused and saddened that players started treating them seriously. You built a rarity system into a discontinued item Andrew, what exactly did you think was going to happen?

I had a yellow phat when I quit (when RS3 was released). Once I realized how expensive they had gotten a few years ago, I recovered my account. Someone had accessed it, removed my phat, and dropped nearly 5,000 castle wars tickets. I was angry, to say the least.

I remember playing Runescape way back and my friend lending me his Santa hat so I can run around in it till he hopped back on the next day. Still one of my favorite memories from my time playing RS.

5:40 yeah ofc. It's not the players' fault though, it's Jagex's. If you don't want your holiday event items to turn into a hoarding thing then do reruns of them. Just putting up a "please be generous with this limited edition item" is naively quixotic. Make them common to the point they're not worth hoarding or selling.
