🔴 BLUEDOT POLL, NARRA'S DIGICEL RENT & MONTEGO BAY METRO — FOLLOW THE MONEY
Tonight on DeeperJamaicaTV, we examine a series of claims, poll findings and questions surrounding the Government, public spending, post-Hurricane Melissa recovery, public transportation and the rapidly developing controversy over NaRRA's headquarters.
🔎 BLUEDOT POLL: IS PUBLIC CONFIDENCE FALLING?
The latest Nationwide/Bluedot poll paints a mixed picture of public sentiment.
Forty-seven per cent of respondents say Jamaica is heading in the wrong direction, compared with 28 per cent who believe the country is heading in the right direction.
And when it comes to economic management, 44 per cent rate the Government's performance as poor, while 24 per cent rate it good.
The poll was conducted between September 5 and 28 among 1,568 registered voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points. Nationwide 90FM
So is this evidence that “everyone hates the JLP”?
No.
But it does raise a bigger question:
What is driving the public's dissatisfaction — and what does the data actually tell us?
🔎 NARRA — THE $115-MILLION DIGICEL OFFICE CONTROVERSY
NaRRA has become the centre of another major public-spending debate.
The authority announced a five-year lease for space at the Digicel Building in downtown Kingston at an annual cost of approximately J$115.2 million, based on a US$26-per-square-foot valuation. Jamaica Observer
Critics have questioned why a disaster-recovery authority needs to spend that amount on private office space when Jamaica is still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.
But the Government says the decision was based on factors including the building's resilience, functionality, location and suitability for disaster continuity. It also says the National Land Agency assessed the rental rate against market conditions. Jamaica Gleaner
And now there's been a development.
The Government says it will scale back the amount of space NaRRA initially planned to occupy, reducing the initial cost after the public backlash. Jamaica Observer
So is NaRRA becoming a “cash cow for the JLP”?
That is a political characterization — not an established fact.
The questions we can investigate are:
Who selected the building?
What alternatives were considered?
What does the lease actually say?
What did the National Land Agency valuation conclude?
And how much will taxpayers ultimately pay?
🔎 MONTEGO BAY METRO — WHO CONTROLS THE OPERATION?
Montego Bay Metro describes itself as an agency of the Ministry of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, with Government-subsidised fares. Its official board listing includes Patrice Clarke as a director. Montego Bay Metro
The Government has also been expanding and restructuring the service, including additional buses and routes across western Jamaica. Jamaica Information Service
But questions are now being raised about 11 alleged missions.
What were those missions?
Who authorised them?
What did they cost?
And where are the records?
🔎 GEORGE DAVIS GETS ANOTHER TOP ROLE
Media practitioner George Davis was elected president of the Jamaica Gasolene Retailers Association for the 2026–2027 term, succeeding Philip Chong.
The new executive has been mandated to advocate for fairer contract terms for gas-station operators dealing with major petroleum companies and other suppliers. Jamaica Observer
So what issues will confront the new leadership?
And what does the appointment mean for the wider petroleum-retailing sector?
🔎 TONIGHT — WE FOLLOW THE PAPER TRAIL
