For five thousand years, Old Valyria ruled Essos with dragons. Then in a single day it was gone, and centuries later still nobody goes back.

A slow, calm history of the Valyrian Freehold, from shepherds among the Fourteen Flames to the greatest power the known world had seen. We follow its wars against Old Ghis and the Rhoynar, the forty families who held its dragons, the roads and the steel no one could copy, and the blood and slavery that fuelled all of it. Then the Doom: one afternoon that swallowed an empire, left behind the Smoking Sea, and made a ruin that no successor has ever claimed.

Settle in. The whole story unfolds at an unhurried pace, right up to the reason the peninsula is still empty.
