In 1943, thousands of captured German soldiers from Rommel's Afrika Korps were shipped across the Atlantic and put on trains bound for prison camps deep inside America. They expected a weak, soft enemy and a bombed-out New York. Instead, they saw an intact skyline, padded passenger seats, steel mills burning through the night, and freight train after freight train of Sherman tanks, trucks, and aircraft rolling toward the war.

They started counting. None of them ever finished.

This WW2 documentary follows the three-day rail journey of German prisoners of war from the East Coast to Texas. It shows how American industrial power, from Pittsburgh's steel mills to Willow Run's bomber line, convinced many Wehrmacht soldiers that Germany had lost the war long before it ended.

Note: "Karl" is a composite character built from accounts by real German POWs held in the United States. The experiences are theirs; only the name is ours.
