SAT Math: Determinants of a 3 × 3 Matrix

In today’s SAT Math lesson, we work with a 3 × 3 determinant and use an important property of determinants.

If

| A  B  C |
| D  E  F | = A
| G  H  I |

what is the value of

| 2A  2B  2C |
| 2D  2E  2F |
| 2G  2H  2I | ?

When every entry in one row is multiplied by 2, the determinant is also multiplied by 2.

Since all 3 rows are multiplied by 2:

2 × 2 × 2 = 8

Therefore:

| 2A  2B  2C |
| 2D  2E  2F | = 8A
| 2G  2H  2I |

Answer: 8A

This SAT Math problem is a great example of how scaling the rows of a matrix affects its determinant.
