I did the first 15 years of my military service with the FAL. Heavy, powerful but awesome. We were very meticulous with cleaning, so reliability was never an issue for me. I have great respect for all those young lads in WW1 and WW2 (on all sides) who, although often underfed and weak still managed to fight their .3 calibre rifles all day long - relatively light rifles with brass butt plates.

The fn fal will never be obsolete. Yes its a bit long for certain engagements but a fine rifle it is. It will absolutely drop a target and that is indeed its purpose

It was the British FN SLR was my weapon in the late 70, early 80s. British messed up changing to the SA80 - the range and power was lacking and that loss was noticed in Iraq and Afghanistan - forcing them to bring in the L129A1 Sharpshooter rifle, for designated marksmen. FN/SLR's rocked, from the Falklands to the Rhodesian Bush War, best bit of kit ever in my personal opinion. Hell of a punch, and out at range - amazing the things it would penetrate! A little heavy true, but you got used to it easily enough, not for wimps maybe? Semi auto was fine, and full auto was largely a waste of ammo.

I was issued a FN FAL in the 1980's in South Africa. I am left handed and had no problem cocking or shooting the rifle. The expended cases never hit me, so it is designed in such a way tat lefties can shoot it.

The trick with the FN FAL is not to select fully automatic.

The FAL was originally developed for an intermediate round. The action was actually designed for the lower pressure ammo. It was scaled up for 7.62 under an agreement brokered by the US and NATO that NATO would adopt the 7.62 (308 Winchester) round if the US dropped the M14 and adopted the FAL. NATO kept their word, the US didn't and the FAL was compromised as a result. It's almost uncontrollable in full-auto, which is why the UK FAL variant, the L1A1 was only made in Semi-Auto. Other nations such as Argentina adopted full-auto models and they were basically mobile anti-aircraft guns, they climb that much after the first few rounds.

That was my rifle in the army . I had never use a real rifle, but I found the recoil very mild compared to the 12 gauge I use afterwards in clay pigeon shooting .

Hm, I am an old curmudgeon, but I know the FN-FAL enough to have it be useful to 600m. I'll stick with the FN-FAL.

I once had a swap-out US unit taking part in NATO famliarization and have them serve with our typical Armoured Infantry load-out.
They instantly fell in love with the FN-FAL. "You can really reach out and touch with this, but DANG It's heavy!. But such a sweet load to carry." Was often heard.
The FAL made perfect sense for our own NATO tasks as Armoured infantry in mostly defensive roles. For up close, we had our Browning Hi-powers and our UZIs and for the heavy stuff, the 84mm CG and the FN-MAG. We had good IFVs with a 25mm Oerlikon and MAG-Coax.
Meanwhile those poor sods with the US Infantry had to tool around in clapped-out M113s and 3.5" Grenade launchers beside their M16s. They looked like warmed up Vietnam leftovers.

i remembered reading from a military magazine that highlighted the importances of high powered ammunitions and heavy weapons.

The complains was that sandbags defences was a problem and their 5.56 lacked power and range to pierce or glaze and avoid getting gunned down by machinegun fire and rpgs.

The British Army FAL was a brilliant riflemans rifle, designed for accurate fire, with a massive punch. We didn't have an automatic option because it was a waste of ammunition. It could be operated left and right hand depending on the available cover, a trained soldier could fire it left and right hand effectively like myself.
