Why did journalist Elena Kostyuchenko see confirmation of her own views of Israel in an Israeli film—and who is responsible for how Israel is viewed by foreign audiences?

Journalist Yevgeny Erlich offers an unexpected twist. His complaint is directed not so much at Kostyuchenko as at Israeli journalists, filmmakers, and public intellectuals themselves. A text created for domestic Israeli debate finds itself in a completely different context outside the country and can be perceived as evidence against Israel itself.

Should a journalist be mindful of such use of their words? Doesn't the demand for accountability turn into self-censorship? And how can one simultaneously criticize one's own state, army, or settlers and explain to foreign readers the context without which a single fact takes on a completely different meaning?

Erlich formulates the problem very starkly: a short news story without the necessary context during a war can no longer function as journalism, but as a weapon of information warfare. At the same time, he doesn't suggest stopping writing about Israel's problems—on the contrary, he demands that they be covered more professionally and in greater detail.
