Before the mid-1970s, it was common for the reels to chanche over from one projector to another. It was a lot of work for the film operator, in an era when the cinema consisted of only one theater.

Voor halverwege de jaren '70 was het gebruikelijk dat de akte's werden overgenomen van de ene naar de andere projector. Het was veel werk voor de filmoperateur, in een tijdperk dat de bioscoop maar uit één bioscoopzaal bestond.

In the late 1960s, I did a short internship at a small town cinema. We only had one projector, a Super Simplex, which held 1800m reels, allowing for a continuous one-hour projection.
Since films at the time had between 10 and 14 parts (5 to 7 reels), and the programs, besides the trailers, always included a cartoon, a newsreel, and a documentary, and there were two intermissions, the main film was shown in the second and third parts.
When there were very long films (3 hours or more), the reels had an extra bit of film to avoid a third intermission, or a short interval was made to change the reels, with the phrase "The program continues immediately" appearing on the screen. This was to prevent people from leaving their seats.
During the intervals, the carbons rods were changed; it was a lantern of up to 90 A, powered by a mercury rectifier.
We used to glue the films together with acetone; back then, films were still made of cellulose acetate. I haven't handled nitrate films.
Old times.
Hugs.
