Can our ancestors help us from the other side of the veil, even after we've stepped away from the Church? In this Latter-day Saint (LDS) episode, Tia Smith visits artist and art therapist Heather Lewis in her studio across the street from the Provo City Temple. Heather tells how she quietly stopped participating after years of leaning on others' testimonies, and how her son's service mission, a patient bishop, and visits from her own family beyond the veil softened her heart and brought her back to the temple.
Heather shares the experience behind one of her paintings. At her lowest point, sitting on a mountain trail, her two grandfathers came to her, gave her a blessing, and told her she could not learn about the temple from outside it. She needed to go back. She also describes returning to the temple and finding the same family she had done endowments for years earlier waiting for her to finish their work, and a name that kept coming to her for days, which she first thought meant she should move to Laramie, Wyoming, until she realized it was an ancestor waiting for his baptism.
Heather has turned twelve of these thinning of the veil experiences into an art show, with a QR code on each piece so you can listen to the story as you look. Tia and Heather talk about why every testimony of the gathering of Israel matters, whether it comes through a podcast, a song, a poem, or a painting, and how ancestors serve as ministering angels to those who help them.

Q: Do ancestors help us from the other side of the veil if we're not active in the Church?
A: Heather Lewis testifies that the Spirit never left her while she was away, and that ancestors and friends beyond the veil ministered to her patiently and comforted her. Her grandfathers appeared to her on a mountain trail and encouraged her to return to the temple.
Q: How do I know if a name that keeps coming to me is an ancestor needing temple work?
A: Heather prayed for names and then looked them up in the FamilySearch app. In one case a name repeated in her mind for days. When she looked him up, he was a relative who needed his ordinances, and she took him to the temple with her son.
Q: How can I share my testimony of the gathering of Israel if I'm not a speaker or writer?
A: Tia and Heather teach that every gift can testify of the gathering, including art, music, and poetry. Heather began painting her spiritual experiences instead of writing them, and the details came back to her as she prayed and painted.
