Why Did Lot's Wife Turn Into SALT? The Hebrew Word Behind Genesis 19

Why did Lot's wife turn into a pillar of salt? Genesis 19:26 says, "But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt." And centuries later Jesus told his disciples, "Remember Lot's wife" (Luke 17:32).

In this Bible study we read the story through the Hebrew text and the King James Version. The angels take Lot's family out of Sodom by the hand, "the LORD being merciful unto him," and give one command: look not behind thee. We look at the Hebrew verb for that look, the detail "from behind him," and why the story begins in Genesis 13, when Lot lifted up his eyes and chose the well watered plain of Jordan. Then we follow salt (melach) through the Hebrew Bible: the vale of Siddim, "which is the salt sea," Deuteronomy 29:23, Judges 9:45, Psalm 107:34, Jeremiah 17:6 and Zephaniah 2:9, where salt marks overthrown ground. We look at the word for pillar (netsiv), what Josephus, the Wisdom of Solomon and Clement of Rome said about her, and the other side of salt: the covenant of salt, Elisha's healed spring and "Ye are the salt of the earth." Finally we come to Luke 17, the days of Lot, the plowman who looks back in Luke 9:62, and Jesus' own explanation: "Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it."

All Scripture quotations are from the King James Version.
