We welcomed Nahuel Pennisi to Vuelta y Media to present his new album, "Nahuel Pennisi Sings Mercedes Sosa." We talked about his idolization of the Argentine artist, reminisced about his beginnings in music playing guitar on the street, and he sang a few songs live.
"I heard Mercedes Sosa for the first time on the radio, at my grandparents' house," he recounted. "I was listening to a folk music station, and 'Alfonsina y el Mar' came on. The song was very powerful. I was struck by its sadness."
"Mercedes had the gift and the ability to calm crowds. She commanded respect and had a commanding presence. In her music, she added emotion to that character."
"I played guitar on the street for three years. Sometimes I went with my grandmother, who gave me a sense of security, and sometimes I went alone. I trusted in people's goodwill (...). My father worked at a rehabilitation center for the blind and understood that you have to let go, even if someone has a disability. It was perhaps a little harder for my mother to accept, but I told them that if something was going to happen to me, it would happen whether I was blind or not."
