I just turned 45 a week ago and the NES defined my childhood. Especially us who grew up in North America. After the crash it was the ONLY gaming system that was relevant. Sure the C64 and Apple computers had games but computers were expensive. The IBM PC was a machine for spreadsheets in 1987. From like 86-91 the NES dominated. I miss those days.

What an absolute masterpiece!!

I should listen to more NES music

I love the quality of your videos, you're also a great narrator !

As far as I know, all of 1985 involved just more small test markets of the NES in different cities in different states, and the system wasn't launched nationwide until 1986. New York wasn't the only test market; they did a number of them in different major cities across the country.

This era of gaming tells such a great tale from multiple perspectives.
* From the business angle, it's a tale of how Nintendo revived an industry thought dead into a multiple billion dollar field in just a few years. There wasn't any tried & true method for success, leading to a lot of risk.
* On the cultural side, video games became a household phenomenon. 1 in 4 American households had an NES. 1 in 3 Japanese households had a Famicom.
* From a technical perspective, games on the NES are a marvel. That every NES game fit on a cartridge under 1MB feels like black magic today.
* And from the view of a humble gamer, there's a charming aesthetic & simplistic design to the 8-bit era. So many NES classics are enjoyable today because finely crafted art, music, and design are timeless. The NES classics are very gameplay dense, challenging, and focused in a way games today aren't (especially in AAA).

I don't think this is nostalgia talking either. Doing a documentary like this about gaming in the 9th generation of consoles just wouldn't be as interesting. The NES is a story of overcoming challenges, treading new ground, trying to find footing, and a new cultural element clashing with existing institutions. And to think the next generation was even more interesting in these regards.

love the channel keep it up homie

"The North American Video Game Crash" the rest of the world was un efected.

1:08:42 "The company is still around today. In 2021 Codemasters was acquired by EA." They survived all this time, just to sign their own death certificate.

Brother, are you from Connecticut? I worked at CT Golf Land.

I loved the nes but playing sonic for the first time is a core memory.  A shame sega couldn’t keep up.

Any chance of a console release for D-Pad Hero games?
