What other Data episodes should I look at next?

One thing that always fascinated me about this and other Data-centred episodes is the gamut of Brent Spiner's acting range. It's really incredible what a great cast TNG had.

Data and Lore at Terlina III.
Soong, at rest.  ✊

Spiner eagerly cites the writers, directors, and sometimes his education process as the reasons for the emotional impact that Data had on us. He claims not to be responsible for the character, but his body of work in TNG is timeless and unforgettable.

That scene where he sets the force fields to move as he walks after setting the code left such an impression on me. It just showed how if he wanted to he could completely out match us humans with our own technology, but he doesn't.

Brent Spiner is a legend. Data is among the greatest Sci-fi characters ever imagined. Great video!

This is a great episode, but there is one crucial thing that was missing. Soong wanted Data to follow in his footsteps, and he very much did with Lal. I always thought that was a bit of a missed opportunity. Even a minute back and forth between Data and Soong talking about the loss of the daughter and granddaughter would have propelled this episode into even higher regard.

Consistently one of the best channels here. Well done, sir!

Your channel is the "In Deep Geek" of Star Trek.

the "worldbuilding via starfleet protocol" is a great observation. It's indeed one of the many classic trek things fundameltally missing in the current shows. I have zero clue about 31st century starfleet. At all.

Ultimately, I believe that Dr. Soong's quote about Data "grieving in his own way" reflects an important idea, and I would even say, an important truth, that no two minds can ever think in an exact same way, yet, through emotions, they can find an understanding that reaches beyond the veil of intellect alone, and Data will inevitably find his own way into this realm of understanding, no matter how long it might take. Data's mind is as unique as each and every mind of a human, yet, all the different humans are still able to find this shared connection though feelings, a path which Data already embarked upon, and shall find success through desire to feel alone, seeing how this desire may be interpreted as a feeling of its own. Beautiful phrase indeed. Great video about great writing.

My head canon is that Lore goes insane by having two emotion chips in him at the end of this episode. He's very different in Descent.

If Picard is the heart of TNG, Data always struck me as its soul. Like the show itself, he could be rigid and (at times) tactless, but he always sought growth and depth, and every episode that features him interrogates what it means to be alive. He explored concepts of personhood, individuality, relationship, family, parenthood, emotions, and all kinds of other aspects of humanity. Even as the Enterprise explored strange new worlds, it had crew members exploring their own existence.

This episode was one of my all time favorites. the ending with Beverly saying "brothers forgive" and his expression had me wondering what he was thinking...

Please keep making more TNG episodes. I can't get enough of your breakdowns. Your format is inspiring me to rethink how i do my own YT videos too. Great work

Spiner playing three different characters in one scene are some of my favorite moments of TNG. They could've much more easily just cast different actors, but I'm so glad they didn't. A wonderful creative/storytelling decision that required solving technical problems to achieve and a masterclass performance to pull off. Ah! It's just such great TV.

8:55 I think a couple of episodes on specific TNG writers would be cool. Explore the style of each one. Especially whoever wrote The Inner Light or Darmok.

Spiner is a national treasure.

I love how this episode does something similar to the TOS episode where Spock hijacks the OG Enterprise, to bring captain Pike back to Talos IV.
Accepting that this one action could end his career, but he does it regardless out of a deep friendship and loyalty.
And Spock is even more slick than Data, because he does it all without even acting weird.

I think Data's takeover of the ship, and the trivial ease in which he accomplishes it, supports the reveal that people had come to fear Lore.
