I didn’t watch Maleficent, but I appreciate how that film and Cruella are at least original spins on the old fairytales, told from a different perspective with a different story. now we don’t even have that, instead it’s all either lines ripped directly from the animated film or even worse even cornier dialogue…
Cinderella 2015 worked so well because it improved upon the weaker points of the original, the remake creatively had a purpose. Moana doesn't, from the trailers, it looks like a shot for shot recreation of the original, it doesn't change or improve anything.
In Cinderella, they weren’t afraid to play with lighting. There are dark shadows and contrasts and bright moments. In Moana (and most other live actions) everything feels flat and lifeless. There aren’t enough contrasts and scenes that are supposed to take place outside, are very clearly shot in a studio with studio lighting. I think Disney really underestimates the power of lighting. Cinderella felt alive while Moana feels boring and dull. That in combination with no originality makes this an obvious cash grab. (Cinderella was probs also a cash grab but at least they created a cinematic masterpiece)
Cinderella also was made by Kenneth Branagh who understands exactly what a prestigious film should look like not just expensive he is a great director and actor and he understands the craft more, also Cinderella was just so magical and fantastic i couldn't agree more even if i hated the other remakes
You missed one essential point: at the time Cinderella came out, we didn't realise that that was... it. That that was the death of art as we knew it. Whereas now, the innevitability of each new live action film makes it bad by default before you’ve even seen it.
I actually like the idea of Cinderella's remake having "a dream is a wish your heart makes" used as a lullaby her mother sang to her or something, as another way to show how close they were before her death, plus it does something different with the iconic song, and they could still have it in the credits. I actually enjoyed the remake fine, but this is a fun little what-if I feel could've enhanced it a little too.
Out of all the remakes out there, Cinderella is my favourite. I still remember the first time I watched it and it was such a breeze of fresh air. Very lovely, really.
I think another reason why Cinderella 2015 worked was because the story was kept the same while adding some new stuff. The movie also proved that you can have a dreamy character and be strong. Kenneth Branagh who directed Much Ado About Nothing and Hamlet (the 4hr one) was the director of the movie which helped because his style is good for it.
The reason i thought about why cinderella worked were the color of the movie and also less green screen. They made a whole ballroom to flim rather than stand between green screen and try to act
The live-action How to Train Your Dragon looked really stupid, because instead of making a live-action movie, they made a live-action cartoon. We can ignore cartoonish ridiculousness and antics from animated characters, but not from live-action people.
And of course they all looked like viking cosplayers with stylized, cartoonish outfits, as if real life humans ever actually dressed like that.
Cinderella looked and felt like an actual movie, a timeless and beautiful one at that. The movie has no filler or padding, because it knew it needed to deepen, not widen, so every moment matters. The song "Lavender's Blue" and its music plays throughout the movie, and it gives off that cinematic fairytale vibe, which just adds to the experience the visuals already give off.
because Cinderella 2015 felt more like an appreciation-letter to the original animated movie while the Moana just from it's trailer feels like a piece of paper with "F you" written in fat red letters.
I agree with this presentation. One of the things I loved about the live action Cinderella is that they improved the romance between Cinderella and the prince rather than erasing it unlike Snow White did. It is way more relatable than love at first sight which is what oldschool Disney used to do. I'm not saying that in a negative way Walt knew how to make perfect love stories but instead of erasing romance hollywood should improve it make it more relatable, grounded, lust etc
Moana is already a semi realistic movie so putting it in live action does almost nothing. It is such a blatant cash grab. Disney no longer cares about making art they are solely focused on making money.

The live-action adaptations of Disney's Cinderella and Moana... one succeeds where the other will fail.
