Chinese sword history is not simply a story of better blades replacing weaker ones. It is the story of the curved dao gradually taking the battlefield throne from the straight, double-edged jian. The jian was precise, prestigious, and deeply tied to the scholar-gentleman tradition, while the Han ring-pommel dao proved easier to teach and tougher in mass combat. Later weapons pushed specialization even further, from the horse-chopping zhanmadao and Tang dao to the long changdao, dadao, and highly curved cavalry sabers. Yet the jian never truly disappeared. While the dao dominated warfare, the jian changed careers, becoming a symbol of status, discipline, ritual, and martial tradition that still survives today.
