The Andaman Islands, 1905. Leela, a young nurse who is terrified of the sea, sails to Port Blair on a timber steamer with a Bengali sailor named Rafiq, an old mahout and his working elephant, Moti.

When a storm sinks the ship, the survivors wash up on a wild island: a woman who cannot swim, a sailor, and an elephant who can. They learn to live together — fresh water dug from a dry creek, a shelter of palm leaves, a whistle the elephant answers — while something old and huge waits in the mangrove creek.

But Moti belongs to Harcourt, the timber contractor who wants her back, and the only way home is across the open sea between the islands.

Inspired by the swimming elephants of the Andaman Islands, brought to the islands for timber work and known for swimming the open sea between them.
