Could coercion be at the root of capitalism and proletarianization? Could people have willingly agreed to work harder? Could we have put shackles on our own feet, consumed by the consumption epidemic and greed?
In this chapter, based on Jan de Vries' book, *The Revolution of Industriousness*, we discussed how people before the Industrial Revolution willingly worked harder to consume more, thus enabling the economic results of the technological breakthroughs that would occur at the end of the 18th century. In doing so, we tried to find answers to many important questions.
How did the household, as an economic unit, reorganize itself in accordance with economic conditions between 1650 and 1950? How did consumption strategies affect the labor supply? Does demand come first, or supply?
