This Japanese white pine had been treasured for many years by a friend's late father. After his passing, it remained in the garden, largely unnoticed by the family. This tree alone survived.

How could we bring out its character?
Unable to picture its finished form, we asked Masahiko Kimura to restyle it.

He examines the base, finds a subtle movement in the trunk, and chooses the front. Branches are selected, bent, and positioned where they are needed. With each decision, a new form begins to emerge.

“There’s at least one good point in it.”

An eye for the character of the material, and the craftsmanship to bring it into form.

A Japanese white pine, left behind in a garden, becomes bonsai once again in the hands of a master.
