the real crime this gamer commits is the giant glaring plot hole that both Catherine and Katherine deserve far better than this dropkick and it's a real suspension of disbelief to think either of them would waste their time on him

After meeting a real life Vincent, I can't bring myself to play this game without drowning in anger, frustration and spite. This game is too real, sheep-men and everything

Love to see the Katherine positivity in this video. So many men online see her as nothing but a nag but she's so much more than that and one of my favorite characters of all time just from her personality alone.

THANK YOUUUU for the katherine positivity 😭😭😭 she gets so much hate for simply wanting her boyfriend to commit to a life with her. and theres nothing wrong with choosing the 'traditional' route. i think many find it inauthetic to Vincent's personality to choose Katherine, but ultimately the game (if you want it to be) can be all about change and coping with getting older!!! its not automatically the end of the world once you get married...sure, you lose things, but you can still gain so much more as well. especially if you have an actual loving caring person by your side 😭

i love how ending up with either of them feels terrible because vincent cannot let go and at the same time refuses to make a decision. Katherine might love him and they might've been together for a long time, but is that enough to stay together when every interaction between them has little chemistry and he is unsure about settling? Katherine is the metaphorical "ball and chain" only because he is too scared to end it and be alone, she is justified in what she wants for her life and deserves someone that wants that too. He traps himself into oblivion while blaming the women and sees it as a dichotomy between two versions of himself to mentally justify the mess when in reality they are both him.  The game itself frames it between the good/evil slider, but watching vincent marry a woman he barely likes and has cheated on multiple times is definitely not a "good" ending.

I thought this was a great video, just wanted to add a small note to something you said earlier in the video about how it may be natural for boys and young men to be immature and stupid because of their age. That may be the way society conditions young men to be, which does not make it inherently natural to them. On the flip side of this, women and girls are often expected to have this advanced emotional maturity and sense of forgiveness to compensate for the immaturity of their counterparts or even the adults around them. Even though Catherine isn’t real, I do think she represents an interesting portrayal of female immaturity (which is very real), whereas Katherine represents the advanced emotional maturity I referenced earlier, having to preempt the needs of the immature man in her life. It’s a great piece of media that accurately represents the  tension people feel in these types of traditional relationships.

Imo really this game is about how Vincent is shitty. He’s a shitty boyfriend and a shitty guy, and it’s a warning to people to just not be like him. Being selfish and non committal and unloyal isn’t good. It comes back to bite you, and it keeps you alone. Humility and kindness and honesty are the only way to maintain a healthy relationship. A lot of people say he “loses himself” when he marries Kathrine. I disagree. He loses the part of himself that’s been fucking up his life over and over, which is the whole point. Learn to be less shitty, and become better for it

I think comparing C and K as "rewards" for Vincent to chase and eventually win is one of the biggest contrivances I seem video essayists make. Vincent's character flaw isn't that he's immature or how he flirts with infidelity, but it's his indecisiveness.

Vincent has yet to figure out what he wants from his life, and K and C serve as Atlus' trademark "Law vs Chaos" dynamic. Katherine offers stability at the price of conformity, while Catherine offers freedom at the price of authenticity. Neither option is objectively correct in the game's eyes because the game isn't trying to tell players which life is best for them, but instead telling it's players to commit to what they want. This even includes the neutral ending where Vincent finds joy in just deciding to be single rather than try and chase either woman, which I personally think is his best ending.

Some men would be happy in a traditional household, some men would be happier living a life of hedonism, but no one, man or woman, wants someone who doesn't know what they want for themselves.

2:18 There's also something interesting about him complaining about the tea being too bitter but his girlfriend has to solve the problem for him. The sugar is right there, couldn't he have fixed the issue himself very easily? Also speaks to immaturity or a poor internal locus of control.

I remember a videogame critic in 2011 that called Catherine "the first trully game 'for adults' I've ever played. Not in the MPAA sense of 'this game may contain material innapropiate for minors' but in the sense that's the first game who wants to start a conversation with its audience about their adult lives. Its the first game you need to be at least 25-years-old to trully understand its themes"
And maybe nowadays there's more mature games, games that you don't trully apreciate unless you have survived into your 40s, but I think that Catherine still holds up, its virtues as a piece of art outweight its flaws

I think its really important to point out that not only is Catherine younger, she’s 10yrs younger than Vincent and Katherine to be exact. The fact his “perfect woman” is so much younger really illustrates his arrested development

I can relate to not wanting the duty of raising a kid, but I personally don't understand the struggles with being faithful.

I never played the game, but from your description, I’ve been a Katherine before. Not so much demanding marriage, but acting as a pseudo-parent to an immature boyfriend. It obviously doesn’t start out that way- they present themselves as mature adults and only show their true colors once you’ve been together over a year and have feelings for them that make it harder to leave.

Catherine walks such an impressive line between being over the top and stupid while being impactful, honest, and humble. Not every story can be THIS.

One thing that should be noted here is that despite the American setting and characters, Catherine was developed by Atlus (a Japanese company). Thus, it has a Japanese cultural subtext found within its story and themes alongside Order vs. Chaos as depicted in the Shin Megami Tensei series as well as references to Persona.

The biggest example of this cultural context is the main antagonist explaining his motives to Vincent. He explains how the rate of population growth for humanity is "less than optimal" and wants to eliminate men in their late 20s and 30s who won't commit to their female spouses and procreate children with and/or cheat on them. Or men who impede the "population model." Now, it's well known that Atlus's home country of Japan has one of the lowest fertility rates in the world to the point where it's a major population crisis with a declining number of births as more and more young people are simply not interested in marriage and having families. This is mixed with a growing share of elderly within the population and a group of Japanese men known as herbivore men who don't want to be in a relationship with a woman or have any interest in sex. Some of this is reflected in the story like the above including the portrayal of marriage.

I cant blame Vincent for his imaturity. But i do blame him for waisting Ks time. Because suprise she dont want to be responsible eighter but she has to be and acts basical like a default parent for him. But she loves him and puts up with it.  She just wants some commitment.

This game was the first time I had to watch a let’s play instead of finishing it myself. I was immediately smitten with Katherine and wanted to match her energy.

But no matter how much I didn’t drink and went straight home from the bar, Catherine would end up in my bed. Felt super icky.
