Who's Human?! The Thing (1982) First Time Watching

First time watching The Thing (1982), and by the end neither of us was totally sure the person on the other side of the couch was still human.

Twelve guys at an Antarctic research station take in a stray dog, which goes about as well as adopting anything in Antarctica can. Now something that can look like anyone is loose inside, and nobody can borrow a cup of coffee without someone reaching for the flamethrower.

John Carpenter directs, with Kurt Russell as helicopter pilot R.J. MacReady, Keith David as Childs, and Wilford Brimley as Blair, plus Rob Bottin's legendary practical effects and an Ennio Morricone score that sounds like a heartbeat you can't trust.

This was the VHS box in the horror aisle that dared you to rent it, and the movie that showed up on cable at 2 a.m. right when you should have been asleep. We're finally watching it together for the first time, with our first impressions, the moments that got us (yes, that one), and our final verdict on whether it lives up to the reputation.

Someone in this comment section is the Thing. Prove you're human.

I feel like “mars attacks” is always a fun watch.

Makes sense that the Thing often expresses itself in the form of an arachnid. I read somewhere that you're never more than a few feet from the nearest spider, so the Thing has probably absorbed plenty of them.

The nice little detail that tells you he got turned after they locked him up. He was destroying the Communication Equipment, then was going to hang himself to stop the spread, but then he then is suddenly "All better and wants to go inside."

"Carrie" (1976) is a great one for Halloween. Also the great cult movie that the same director did before that was called "Phantom of the Paradise". It's a fun and freaky rock musical, kinda like "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".

I got all 3 of them on DVD the original one for the 50th and the remake for the 82 and the prequel for the 2011

Good reaction. They made a version in 1951, and it's quite good, but they didn't really have the special effects then.

You asked for recommendations, so:

Alphabetically:
"Alien,"
"Aliens,"
"Body Heat,"
"Contact,"
"The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951 NOT the 2008 remake),
“The Dead Zone,”
"Deja Vu,"
“Enemy Mine,”
"Fast Times at Ridgemont High,"
"Forbidden Planet,"
"Frequency,"
"Gandhi,"
"Ghost,"
"The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,"
"Good Will Hunting,"
"The Green Mile,"
"It Happened One Night,"
"It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World,"
"The Matrix,"
"Miracle on 34th Street" (1947 NOT the remake) (Christmas theme),
"Mississippi Burning,"
"North by Northwest,"
"Once Upon a Time in the West,"
"The Pink Panther,"
"Psycho,"
"Rear Window,"
"The Right Stuff,"
"Rio Bravo,"
"Some Like it Hot,"
"Stalag 17,"
"The Terminator,"
"The Time Machine (1960 version),"
"Topper,"
"2001: A Space Odyssey (hard to understand without reading the book),"
"Vertigo,"
"Zero Dark Thirty"

John Carpenter was light years ahead! Great review guys! I recommend "War of the Worlds" with Tom Cruise circa 2005 Directed by Steven Spielberg.

Watch the 2010 prequal. I forget the actual year but it was released around that time.

Wonderful fun, thank you!!! Actually, Jed, the half wolf/doggy won the coveted Golden Milk Bone Award at the Beijing Film Festival for this performance, lol...Seriously though, you two would really like The Fly with Jeff Goldblum if you liked this. Return Of The Living Dead from 1985 is my favorite and just an awesome fun ride. John Carpenter's The Fog and The Descent are also fantastic, we must jump scare you two😊😊😊

The Thing should technically be called The Things because every cell is a sentient being with a nervous system. All the cells work together in real time to spontaneously evolve in response to stimulus - like a flock of birds changing its direction en masse to avoid danger. 😬😬

Very Cool Thumbnail 😂," I like it alot"

Do you think McCready and/or Childs were infected at the end, or just accepted their fate that they'll freeze to death?

Try "To live and die in LA" stars Willem Dafoe and William Petersen (Grisom from CSI) Almost banned twice for realism. Shot on a lot locations without permissions using hidden cameras. Directed by the savage William Friedkin. Make sure the edge of your seat is comfortable.😂
