Another masterpiece from IU, we got goosebumps. The song is a sad song but IU's vocals were just so perfect that we kinda got distracted by it. Also the don't forget to scan the QR Code and have some fun. Thank you for watching this video.

IU Digital Single [이 별로부터]
이 별로부터(Unknown Planet)

이별로부터
I wondered why she was saying things she does not usually say, like parallel universe theory or another world, in the shooting star content on IU's channel at first, but it turned out to be a kind of spoiler for the title Unknown Planet (or From the breakup).
It says Cheolsu and Younghee, who departed at different times, meet..., which seems like a hint for a type of math problem and a clue that pierces through the entire music video. Also, at the 50,000 km mark, the initials of the male lead, Jorge López Astorga (JLA), are written in the order of ALJ and circled, which also shows the format of a math problem.
Since it shows parts rather than whole sentences, it is hard to say for sure. It is just an assumption, but it seems to be a problem asking you to calculate the time of when the two main characters, who departed from different time zones, will finally meet after a few years.
Since it is the 9th generation of UAENA and it is about this star, an internet page showing that Pluto, the 9th planet of the solar system, was expelled on September 16, 2006, appears partially cut off. The actual date was August 24, 2006, but let's just go with September 16th. That way, the setting of the song reappearing after 20 years falls perfectly into place. Let's just agree that the answer to the first problem is 20 years (shh).
When Pluto was stripped of its 9th planet status, an unknown, unidentified light appears and then disappears. And on the screen, texts like 'not a shooting star', 'false', and 'disappeared from observation' are mixed with news screens, appearing frame by frame. This is a concept that overlaps with the actual asteroid Adalberta incident and 1892 X. It existed when first observed, disappeared for about 90 years, and then reappeared. In other words, the Adalberta incident is a story where an asteroid discovered in 1885 seemed to disappear, was rediscovered under the name 1892 X, and only in 1977 were the two names confirmed to be the exact same celestial body.
And the phrase in the middle, If I knew summer would end this quickly, I should have left with you, makes me confused whether this is about her comeback or something she is saying to a past lover.
This part becomes a bit clearer if you watch the teaser. In the teaser, there are scenes where choosing a planet matches people up for a 1-on-1 conversation, but then all connections temporarily cut out, leaving people in panic. At this moment, IU, who is matched with a man studying astronomy, mentions, My hair got shorter, hasn't it? and then Hair.... In reality, IU actually cut her long hair to a short bob, and in the MV, time flows backwards, showing her hair changing from short back to long. Considering the cultural and symbolic meaning that cutting one's hair after a breakup represents cutting off the past and making a fresh start, we can tell that the lyrics are ultimately about accepting a breakup.
The song title is also a brilliant wordplay. Although they sound identical when spoken, changing the spacing completely alters the meaning from 이 별로부터 (UNKNOWN PLANET) to 이별로부터 (From the breakup). In Korean, the word for star is conventionally used to refer to both stars and planets, which is why the official English title became UNKNOWN PLANET. Just as planets are lonely beings that know of each other's existence but can never reach one another, I think this MV and teaser use that exact metaphor for the unreachable relationships between people. It made me feel so sad looking at the lyrics, and I even worried at the end whether this could be performed live because they stacked multiple vocal layers during recording.
To briefly summarize the music video, it seems to tell the story of what happens while quickly changing orbit and rapidly escaping the solar system's influence after receiving a gravitational assist, much like a spacecraft using the gravity of another planet.
It seems to be a story where the male lead, Jorge López Astorga, falls in love while attempting numerous connections with Planet Nine, the asteroid IU is riding on. They connect through video calls on a platform called Planet for 10 years, but then, for some reason, a signal error pops up on the PC and the connection with IU is lost. Seeing as the MV says 10 years later, the heartbroken male lead Jorge López Astorga is shown struggling for the next 10 years to become an astronomer while longing for IU.
Meanwhile, IU, who is on Planet Nine, parts from this star (Earth).
Planet Nine, where IU was staying, was not an asteroid about to collide with Earth, but one of the planets on the outskirts of the solar system. The male lead Jorge López Astorga simply grew his love from his own isolated position, but in reality, they were never close to each other even once. People on Earth might have thought an asteroid was approaching, but it just quickly changed its orbit and escaped the solar system's influence by using a gravitational assist, much like a spacecraft.
Listening to the narration at the very end of the music video's outro is a huge help in interpreting it.
