So this one is told at you. You get picked, you get fattened up in the town hall on the city's money for a year, and then they walk you out the gate while everyone throws rocks. Greek cities really did keep a person on retainer for exactly this, and the word for that person eventually turned into a swear word you could scream at somebody in the street.
The part that broke my brain was Leucas, where they tied live birds to the guy before shoving him off a cliff and had fishing boats waiting below to fish him out, which tells you something about what these rituals were actually for. Whether any of them died is still an open fight between classicists and I gave you both sides instead of the one that sounds cooler.
