bunch o idiots it is aprox 65 rockwell hardness  and the point loading of roller bearings and almost perfectly straight weldimg was tried by many in the past and was never reliable get a 3.0 merc or even a later 3.0 johnrude the lighter weight alone will be an improvement if you must fix that refrigerator find a 4.0 block

I am retired from working in machine shops. The journal could be welded harden and turned for about $1200.00. Just a thought

theres plenty of machine shops that can weld that crank up and turn it out perfect for you 300 bucks

I have a 1987 rude V8 in my garage. I picked it up from a backyard where it was sitting covered. Brought it home and it fired. These are icons and a lot of fun. Nothing else like them.

I bet Allen Millyard could make you a new crank in the shed behind his house.

I'm currently a MFG Engineer and we sometimes repair shafts to build surfaces back up. Look into laser cladding or you can get it chromed and reground.

There’s a place called Premier Sports in Needles California that has a MASSIVE stockpile of old two stroke outboard parts. If they didn’t have the parts you’re looking for, they could possibly get you a better lead on someone who might have the parts. I’d try and give them a call to see. Worth a shot for a possible crank.

I  was product engineer on that motor for about one year.  One of the downsides of it was that the block castings were very inconsistent and the transfer ports on the 4 corner cylinders were all over the place. Some were so low that the motor would make about 255 horsepower.  The best I ever saw was 295 horsepower. The block castings were made in Birmingham England  and not under the direct control of OMC.

Marine Crankshaft in Santa Anna California would be able to repair that crank and make it better than new.  Save the V8!

Es freut mich dieser Bericht über die Zerlegung des V8-Zweitakt-Motor. Ich bin fachkundig bezüglich historischer Zweitaktmotoren. Den Versuch einen 8-Zylinder-ZeitaktMotor zu bauen hatte 1931/32 bereits J.S.Rasmussen, der Gründer der DKW-Motorrad-Werke in Deutschland.
Wie ein Zweitaktmotor aufgebaut ist und welche Komponenten er hat ist mir bekannt — auch der neuralgische Punkt der Kurbelwelle mit den Rollenlagern. Das Kurbelgehäuse wird vom Benzin-Ölgemisch umspült und dabei verdichtet. Die Lager sind extrem korrosionsanfällig wegen des Schwefels im Kraftstoff; sind nur kleinste Partikel auf den Rollen oder Rollenlaufflächen werden diese rasch größer und das Lager bekommt Spiel und beginnt zu rauschen, irgendwann schlägt das Lager dann aus.
Wie man am zerlegten Motor schön sieht ist nur ein Pleuellager von acht betroffen, eigentlich typisch. Nun ist aber noch nicht Ende, normalerweise ist die Zweitakter-Kurbelwelle gepresst, das heißt, man kann die Welle auseinander ziehen und den Zapfen neu machen, die Welle wieder zusammenpressen. Wie es an dem Beispielmotor ist, weiß ich nicht, wenn man die Welle nicht zerlegen kann, dann ist Metall aufspritzen auf dem Pleuelzapfen möglich, anschließend wird der Zapfen bearbeitet und schließlich vergütet. Rollen gibt es in verschiedenen Maßen, danach wird der Zapfen bearbeitet, die Rollenkäfige sind nach der Entrostung verwendbar, da sie nur eine Führungsaufgabe haben … also die Wiederherstellung ist möglich …

Modern machining techniques can easily save that crankshaft.

These are rare!  I have never seen one in person.

Glad to see you back on this project, I hope you manage to source another same engine or a replacement crank, lots of helpful comments may garner a solution. Its such an iconic motor with an iconic boat they need to live again for that Miami Vice 80s nostalgia we all need a fit of such fun given how crazy the world is.
