I have the full set and I absolutely love them. I've had no problems with scratchiness at all, can get nice details and what I love about them is that if you sharpen them with a blade, you can use the bits you cut off as powder for bigger shapes and whatnot. I use them in combination with soft pastels and I think they are great. I use them on pastelmat and because that paper is so textured, you can fairly keep a nice point by rotating the pencils a bit when you use them (and sharpen them with sand paper) Thanks for your review. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy them, but I think you might have to use them a bit more to get used to them.

I got a 48 full size set of SOHO Urban artist Woodless Pastel Pencils for $65, they are really nice.

I've bought that set last week. For a very good price. I'm excited how they'll work. I have the Cabothellos, too. Faber Castell Pitt and Caran D'Ache

I think this Senelier pastel sticks are good for a colored pencils artist or enthusiast of the colored pencils, for there hardness. Because they're hard, and I have never seen, until now, a pastel stick that couldn't work on top of a single layer of any brand of soft pastels. For my taste, no.... thank you Jason for your honest review.

Jason, thank you so much for this honest review! I was considering these until I saw that they’re made in China… and then I was skeptical. Some art supplies made in China are fine, but I’ve had such a wide variety of quality, that I’m hesitant to purchase without seeing a review first. It’s interesting that there’s so much variation between colors. It sounds like they have some kinks to work out before I’ll consider these.

Thanks for the honest review.  Since I am a hopeless addict of art supplies, you gave the brakes for these Sennelier.
I like Carbothello pencils the best.and they are affordable.

Thanks for doing this testing.  I appreciate your thoughts as you are such a competent pastel artist.  You make gorgeous art!  Patty

I have the Sennelier, but I bought the Soho woodless pastel pencils, and some other woodless pastel pencils found on Amazon Germany, they are simply incomparable! The Senneliers simply do not work on Pastelmat compared to the other ones mentioned in this post

Thanks Jason you have saved me from myself again 😊 great review your really can hear the difference

Art supplies have rocketed these last few years, luckily I stocked up, because of a health problem, thinking I would lose myself in my artwork. I got a box set of Caren D’Ache pencil which I had wanted for years, at a good discount price. A month later noticed they were selling for nearly double what I paid for them. So glad I bought them then,as I wouldn’t be able to afford them now. I Always research and read reviews or watch YouTube video reviews before buying Art Supplies or anything really. Better being safe than sorry.

For what it's worth Great Arts are currently offering quite deep discounts on these.  Most of the sets show as sold out, but they are selling the full size sticks at £1.86 open stock, which might make them a more attractive proposition.  Of course there are some caveats, I don't know how long the sale will last, and you do have to wait for them to ship from Germany although if you buy sufficient you can get free shipping.  Additionally, if you don't think they are suitable for you then you may not want them at any price, but worth considering if the cost is a significant negative factor.

Everything from Sennelier is expensive… but generally top drawer.  I use Derwent pencils as an adjunct to Sennelier and Unison soft pastels

Thanks so much for making this review!

Thank you so much for this video!! Excellent video it helped me with my decision!

Thank you Jason. I was so very tempted to order a set but won't now I've seen your review. I'll stick to my Pitts and  Carbothellos.

I bought the carbothello on your recommendation and I thank you for the research!

Thanks for the review. 😊

Phew! I’m glad I waited for your review. Thank you, Jason, for taking one for the team!

Thanks for the review. I am glad that I also have the same base supplies that you use (Carbathellos, Pitt,  Rembrandt, and Pan Pastels) and they work fine. I also have Conte 'a Paris sticks if I need something hard.  (I think you recommended them to me years and years ago) That covers the base.  Nothing else beats Pastelmat in my opinion. And I was leery about getting the Rembrandt soft pastels, because the price was so reasonable, but I listened to you and they are awesome. Isn't it funny when we are afraid to "not" get the most expensive supplies because they may not be good enough?  It goes to show that more expensive is not always better. Thank you. :)
