Napoleonic Wars: Battle of Aspern-Essling 1809

Epic History

In 1809, with Napoleon and his best troops bogged down in Spain, Austria decided to try to get revenge for her humiliation at Austerlitz three years before. Archduke Charles led an invasion of France's ally Bavaria, but Napoleon raised fresh troops and transformed the strategic situation in four days of hard fighting along the Danube. But having taken Vienna, Napoleon's overconfidence led to a desperate battle at Aspern-Essling, resulting in his first major defeat as Emperor, and the death of his closest friend.

I live in Aspern, which is now part of Vienna. Crazy to think that a hundred meters from my house, 150.000 men fought to the death.

The Austrians sending those barriers down stream to destroy the bridges built by the French was brilliant strategy.

When Napoleon needed a second Napoleon, he send Davout.

"Oh no we left Marshal Davout alone, again"

Archduke Charles has to be the most brilliant Austrian strategist.

Charles did what he could with the tools he had. He came up with a plan using his strengths. Bravo

All the bridge engineers and crews are like "Oh come on! Seriously?"

Napoleon: so what are you gonna do now?

Austria: I don't know, I never thought I'd make it this far

While Napoleon bombed Vienna, Beethoven was writing his Emperor concerto. After taking it, Haydn died while playing the Austrian Anthem to Emperor Francis.

Napoleon had been beating the stuffing out of the Austrians for more than 10 years by that point so its not surprising that he came to underestimate them and that made his loss all the more shocking

Much respect to the Austrian army; despite having a bad military record they were the only ones who fought and won a battle against Napoleon without any foreign help

Honestly amazing job! This has to be the best series on napoleon's battle on youtube. This feels so much more in depth than other channels. Great job!

Coignet mentions in his memoirs that during the battle of aspern he thought he was hit in the arm by a cannonball, but instead he was hit by someone else blown off arm in his own arm. It hit his arm so hard that it stuck to Coignet's arm and paralyzed it for a while!
