Overlooking the majestic bay of Algiers, the Casbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, is one of the most beautiful sites in the Mediterranean. This historic quarter embodies the splendor of Algerian heritage, but also the ills of its society. A unique example of Islamic architecture, the Casbah houses the remains of the citadel, ancient mosques, Ottoman palaces, traditional dwellings, small artisan workshops that keep ancestral skills alive, and more. But what makes it truly unique is its Arab-Berber urban structure combined with a strong sense of community. Nicknamed the soul of Algiers, this quarter has always attracted visitors from all over the world.
Walking through its narrow, winding streets was a highlight of my stay in Algeria. Once I reached the top of the Casbah, on one of the many terraces, I admired the Bay of Algiers for several minutes. Its panorama is breathtakingly beautiful! Up there, I rediscovered other strengths of Algeria: its people and their hospitality. I quickly struck up a conversation with some young Algerians. After taking a few photos and sharing many laughs, they invited me to have tea at their home, welcoming me like a member of the family. An unforgettable moment.
