Japan Hid Its Midway Plan in Code — Then America Sent a Fake Radio Message About Water

🇺🇸 In May 1942, American codebreakers at Station HYPO in Pearl Harbor were trying to answer one critical question: what did the Japanese Navy mean by “AF”?

The Americans already suspected that AF referred to Midway, but they needed proof. Japanese naval communications were protected by the JN-25 code, and only part of the system could be read. The solution came from an unusual deception: Midway would send a false radio message claiming that its freshwater supply was failing.

The Japanese were listening.

When a Japanese message soon reported that AF had a water problem, Station HYPO had the confirmation it needed. Commander Joseph Rochefort and his team could now connect the Japanese operation to Midway with far greater confidence.

This documentary follows the men of Station HYPO, the difficult process of breaking JN-25, the mystery surrounding “AF,” the false-water message, the intelligence that revealed the Japanese timetable, and the final battle that destroyed four Japanese carriers.
