I LOVE the part when Jimmy goes on about being good at something - he's sorted, I've no doubt his children are as well - but to continue doing it because you feel (and have ample evidence to support it) that you are truly good at something - that's an artisan at work, no longer a provider. That's the next level skill you can only show to your children, never teach through simple words. And I respect the hell out of that.
I've grown to really like Jimmy over time. Seems like a good light-hearted lad. Thoughtful. Cool to see them chat. Ran into Tommy once going into a rehearsal space in Galway. I remember seeing a monster of a fancy car and saying hmmm somebody owns something here. I'm walking in and this little beardy guy with thick glasses and a sock hat is walking out. Didn't recognise him I just went to open the door for him. He smiled looked down a little bit at the floor, reached out, help open the door and said "ah slide on in fella." Something real friendly about him. Didn't chat him up or anything. He got into that car.
I have been surprised at how good a host Tiernan is - he actually listens to his guests when one would think the temptation, especially for a comedian, would be to interrupt with quips and rejoinders, ie what you get on every single other chat show.
This is one of those wonderful interviews where the honesty and rawness, and intinmacey ... makes both guys go up in my estimation. The older I get, the more I think stand up is the ultimate politics - and at the same time we're looking at two pissant millionaires who make a very good living out of talking crap!!!!
