What if the history of Hawaiʻi that most of us grew up learning is only part of the story?
In Episode 90 of the BrotherLee Time Podcast, Kenji Lee and Taisei Lee sit down with Dr. David Keanu Sai for an extensive conversation about his life, Hawaiian history, international law, identity, education and the argument that has defined decades of his work: that the Hawaiian Kingdom continues to exist under international law and that Hawaiʻi should be understood through the legal framework of prolonged occupation.
But this conversation begins long before court cases, treaties and political science.
Dr. Sai takes us back to growing up in Kuliʻouou surrounded by ʻohana, fishing, gathering food, preparing kalua pig and living Hawaiian culture before he ever thought of those everyday experiences as “cultural practices.” He talks about attending Kamehameha Schools, being far more interested in football than academics, graduating with a GPA that nearly closed the door on college, and the decision that unexpectedly sent him into the U.S. military.
That decision changed the direction of his life.
Dr. Sai walks Kenji and Taisei through his interpretation of Hawaiian nationality, the difference between ethnicity and citizenship, the 1893 overthrow, annexation, denationalization, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Council of Regency, the laws of occupation and his three-phase vision of verification, education and eventually ending the occupation through a treaty of peace.
