How did the biblical account of the origins define the relationship between cosmic order and human responsibility? Through a rereading of the book of Genesis, this lecture will reconstruct how the Old Testament tradition conceived of creation as the birth of the natural cosmos and, above all, as the dawn of a moral order within which human beings are called to confront freedom, limitations, and responsibility toward creation.

Gianfranco Ravasi, Cardinal, is President Emeritus of the Pontifical Council for Culture and the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology, and was President of the Dicastery for Culture. His intellectual work lies at the intersection of biblical exegesis, theological reflection, and dialogue with contemporary culture, demonstrating how the great religious traditions continue to offer crucial tools for interrogating the fundamental questions of existence, the symbolic meanings of human experience, and the relationship between interiority, the flow of history, and the spiritual dimension. His most recent books include I Was a Blasphemer, a Persecutor, and a Violent Person. Biography of Paul (Milan, 2024) and Keeping the Light. A Daily Breviary (Milan, 2025), as well as the seminal New Guide to the Bible (Alba, 2008).
