if you take the Steam hardware survey with that, Gabe shows up to your house an hour later.

Returning to this right after the new Steam Machine announcement lmao

This aged wonderfully.

At this point it's clear valve sent this to John Bringus to reintroduce Steam Machines into the collective unconscious

It's so on brand for valve to make their console feel "alive", especially with how many sentient one-eyed robots they have in their games :)

If you assume that this thing really was meant to be used with a controller only, two things make a lot more sense:
1. The recovery button taking you to the BIOS
2. The BIOS offering a virtual keyboard

"In terms of the Half Life games...uhhh...game."

That was a massive freudian NDA breaching slip, buddy.

i came to this video RIGHT as i saw the announcement

I didn't realize my 3600/RX 580/8GB Ram prebuilt was almost biblically accurate valve hardware.

Ah yes, $1.16 hidden russian valve schematics

@tearsandash 1 year ago

That has to be my favorite front panel I've ever seen. Best implementation of a touch-based power button imo. It makes the machine feel alive in a way

11:18 loving how you can hear the increasing panic in his voice as he reads the legal disclaimer. Like he’s actively under attack by a bunch of lawyers or something.

Setting, Valve HQ, Meeting Room 3
"So you see Gabe, we think we can hold off on Half Life 3 a little bit longer"
Gabe shudders
"Ah, Sir? Isn't holding off the plan?"
Gabe rises from his chair
"Someone just booted a Steambox... MY Steambox. I thought you said it was destroyed!"
While rising from his chair, the Newell Choak grasps a mid-ranking employee
"FIND IT! BRING IT TO ME!"

Valve should just make these computer cases to sell, that button is godly! (It has some capacitive touch sensor like the valve index controllers and steam deck has)

@JJj-dr8fp 1 year ago (edited)

6:40 That controller 👀

@TheDrDenmark 1 year ago

I love the fact this video just briefly turns into a Tyler McVicker video, thats absolutely hilarious

@nep3ta 1 year ago (edited)

I'd buy that case if Valve sold it just for that power button alone, so cool

I think the best bit of all this is that Newell was one of Microsoft's early developers, being a key developer on the first three releases of Windows and leading the development of the Windows 95 version of Doom, in a direct effort to prove Windows was a viable gaming platform.

It must have been kinda sad for him seeing Windows 8 try and butcher the user experience and open nature of PC gaming, knowing he was one of the people which helped establishing Windows as THE platform for PC gaming.
