Thank you very much Kibbles for sponsoring this video!

...and then you bake the Goodberries into a pie, which is enough to satisfy one halfling.

I'll never forgive wizards for taking away my Command: Defecate. 😢😢😢

I had a player in my Curse of Strahd campaign cast command on a hag who was holding a little girl hostage. He used the “drop” command and she failed her saving throw. It totally changed the outcome of the session and very well might’ve saved the child’s life! Such an underrated spell!

Wasnt expecting to see "17 second ago" when i decided to check for a new video

I really think that there is an argument to be made for jump here. It’s just so much mobility for basically free. I guess it really depends on the importance of terrain and positioning in your campaign, but in all the ones I’ve played in it’s so huge.

my guess for spels that will be in this list (not in order)
absorb elements
bless
comand
find familiar
gift of alacrity
goodberry
sheild
silvery barbs
sleep
healing word

I remember using the old sleep spell to put an entire town hall meeting in a village to sleep. Commoner stat blocks allow a bunch of funny stuff.

Command is my favorite 1st level spell.

It really is crazy how many amazing first level spells there are. Magic initiate is such a nice feat for that reason

Hey man, I appreciate and value your content.

Last time I was this early, my mom went into labor.

9:21 That sounds like a perfect time for a night raid...

I understand that the new sleep is overall worse but its still one of, of not my all time, favorite spells since its what got me to fall inlove with full casters. Getting to completely shut down an effectively level 30 BBEG with a single 1st level slot was glorious.

I want to say thank you because i started playing DnD some months ago and your videos are GOLD for me, they really helped me to understand the game better and how to play it properly, my party are full newbies and my DM is grateful that at least another guy and me actually understand how to play the game and plan a good combat strategy

My top 3:
1. Shield. I have 18 defense by default, I get another 5. I like it.
2. Find the Familiar. An incredibly versatile spell. Ride an eagle? Gain blindsight? Use an orangutan as a crafting assistant? Dragon's breath? Send an untraceable letter in a raven's memory? This spell allows you to really test the limits of what the DM can tolerate.
3. Identification. My DM loves cursed items.

Waow... Kobold is so real with the ending of the video...

As a side note I find Sleep scales better for its single target use, so at least it doesn't fall completely off.

I will say, prior to level 9 as an Artificer I used Web basically in EVERY single fight...absurdly good spell. Combined with my high AC I've tanked impossible scenarios solo and come out with no problems. I've had combats where I was missed 24 times in a single round because of the mass disadvantage and my high AC and position so they went for me.

BIG thing about Find Familiar is the BAT form....blindsight on a bonus action gets you around an absurd amount of obstacles. I made a number of illusions and things like Displacer Beasts irrelevant. It also deals with fog, and combined with Eversmoking Bottle is mean as shit. Flyby gets a lot of attention with Owl but I really think Bat is the best form as it gives you a NEW tool pretty much inaccessible to 99% of classes and subclasses at those early levels.

Shield is the best 1st level spell. I used it in basically every fight and only didn't in every turn because of Absorb elements being situational (I don't think it's 2nd place material as elemental damage isn't that common in my game, I used it maybe twice) and Flash of Genius ate my reaction economy up to fight saves. It only compounded with my 22 AC at tier 2 and my DM started punishing the entire party by upscaling hit modifiers...so I just pulled back on AC scaling because I felt by proxy I was making my party easier to hit. I think his lack of experience with tier 2+ made him think everyone's AC would scale like mine and it just didn't happen. The Paladin still had their base AC at level 9 from plate....I was just going up and up. Once he started saying mundane creatures had a +9 to hit at level like...7...I said, ok, this is doing a psychologically bad thing to my DM that is making this game harder than it should be for everyone but me and everyone was going down all the time...except me and the Barbarian/Rogue multiclass that halved damage twice.

Haste tangent below,

Hey leave Haste alone, as a 2024 Artificer with a tanky build it's awesome to be able to drop it on myself and massively improve my combat and roleplay speed for a number of factors. In my long campaign it's my most used level 3 spell by a long shot as "catch up" is huge for any chases and the extra combat options aren't nothing when you have complex objectives that may burn an action to deal with. I've only dropped it once with Con saves, Warcaster advantage, and the ONLY time I did it was because I didn't have Mind Sharpener ring going yet, which would have saved me...what got me? A crit that did 90% of my HP (60+ damage with 70ish health...ouch). Was I out that turn? Sure, but as a summoner focused build I still did MOST of my damage in that turn due to my summons not being impacted and my team backed me up (for the first time they ever had to). Prior to haste and Winged Boots my Artificer was SOOOOOOO bad in movement focused combat I've never had to worry about difficult terrain or getting into position again. I'm first in their intended location which allows me to be an early threat to take early hits off the board with my high AC.

Is it a good spell for 90% of classes? no. It's genuinely bad with con save proficiency on casters being rare and targets getting bonuses from it not reinforcing the caster. Casting it on myself with all those bonuses and having major uses for actions is huge. For Artificer specifically it's huge and has been majorly impactful combined with Winged Boots to give me absurd fly speeds combined with 2 dashes from 2 actions I can burn on dash making me impossible to lose in a chase. For a wizard? Bad, because staying in range can be death. For a tanky Artificer? Fine. I want to be in their face and I can do a lot in range with control to do something about them getting away with a number of magic items and spells. Even on the most MUNDANE turn I am attacking more than the fighter, doing more damage, have higher stats, and spells (+an incredible spell economy at level 9-10 and absurd at 11)

I know "Bless" is a better use of Concentration but for my selfish ass, it's awesome to get so much more tankiness out of it with 2 more AC and help on my poor dex saves. Again, if your DM is the type to really push you to use actions you can be THE person to be dealing with an objective by getting there first and dealing with it while still being able to cast spells and deal damage. However it also helps I have a Paladin who casts bless in every combat so I get way less bang for my buck using it. Stacking Bless with Haste is ABSURD. Being able to deal with an objective, then single target attack with a smite is ABSURD. It's sooooo much fun factor I cannot stop. I'm addicted to haste, the lethargy has almost never been an issue. Granted, my DM has rarely thought to utilize dispel magic to take me out, but again...because I am a summoner taking me out is hardly a huge deal with I keep most of my defenses as I'm not incapacitated and keep most of my defense in lethargy outside of reactions.

While I think for MOST casters, it's not good, for SOME builds it's absurdly good to an extent that everyone in my party finds it crazy. Even in roleplay it comes up all the time. Oh the druid is swimming away? My 40ft swim speed from Cape of Manta Ray just got boosted to 80 + 2 dashes...they cannot run from me. They tried to run and I just made them a fool in the water when they were a dolphin...it was so mean.
