The Final Countdown (1980): The Cut Scene That Reveals What Happened After the Storm

The Final Countdown (1980) left audiences with one of sci-fi cinema’s most intriguing time-travel mysteries after the USS Nimitz passed through the strange storm. But deleted material offered additional clues about what happened afterward and how the experience affected those caught inside it. Here’s what the missing scene reveals about the aftermath of the storm and the film’s mysterious ending.

No cut scenes were harmed during this presentation.

Charles Durning fought in Europe during WWII. He was in the first wave on D-Day. He was wounded multiple times in combat. No wonder he was loved by everyone in the cast and crew. He was an outstanding man.

The title is a lie. There’s nothing in this video about a “cut scene”.

I watched this to the end, waiting for the mythical deleted scene.

I knew a guy that was stationed on the Nimitz when they filmed it. The scene where the Japanese prisoner starts shooting in sick bay was not announced to the crew in advance and the marines came running out of their berthing/armory with loaded M-16s looking for the trouble. They were lucky no actors were killed that day.

I joined the Navy for my reasons. I requested duty onboard the mighty Nimitz because of this movie. Loved it too...

It is always interesting looking at something like this as I was there while the movie was being made. The Nimitz was not at Hawaii as the story says, it was stationed in Norfolk, VA and most of the scenes were filmed while the ship was pier side. If we wanted to get off the ship during the filming we had to leave before filming started otherwise we were stuck until filming ended. We did get to see an unfinished cut while in the Indian Ocean though, so that was pretty cool

One of my All Time Favorite Movies

I learned most of this when I was on the Eisenhower from some old Nimitz sailors! Heres another fact, The guys operating the reactor and Machinery spaces (making everything work on the Carrier) Those boys Knew more and were paid less than Minimum wage! Pilots were the uber rich compared to Us!

Saw this movie when it premiered on Long Island, NY. Grumman factory bought most of the tickets and handed them out to employees - many of whom were retires that had served in WWII. The theater went nuts with cheering when the Tom Cats shot down the two Zeros.

Fun fact: If this movie was made today with the same timeline, the carrier would travel back to 1987.

Still one of my all time favourite movies. I wish they'd remake it and actually change history before coming back. That would've been epic.

I saw this in the theater with a buddy of mine. He was so impressed he joined the Navy a week later.

CLICKBAIT!!! Nothing about any cut scenes at all...

I remember watching this at the Bijou Theater in San Diego, 1980. The whole theater was full of Pac Fleet sailors, everyone loved it!

While finishing up my military service in the 1980s, and afterward, I met guys that had served on aircraft carriers and they told me the flight deck scenes were perfectly realistic. Now I know why. But I'm still waiting for that cut scene.

There would be too many possible outcomes, trying to change the past on such a large scale. I would leave it alone

I watched this movie in 1980 at the theater on the Norfolk Naval Base where the movie was filmed. Enjoyed it immensely.

My Uncle worked for a defense contractor and at the time this movie was filmed abord the carrier he was on board. He told us about some of what happened and even told us where he was visible in the background. It is for a brief second but he's there. I liked the film when I saw it.
